Wow I only knew about this bloke from the tabloids but actually checking out his playing he is just all round terrible.
Again the mediocre are celebrated, even BB King looks embarrassed in this clip. Well done to unravelling the feeling of the blues sleazy mayer, try bending some notes and actually play with some feeling. God's sake.

No offence intended at all, I only recently decided to have a listen as I like the blues. But I'll say again WOW what a disapointment. He wouldn't play that flat if he had true passion for it surely.
I'll stick to Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf.

Listen to his album 'Continuum', it is excellent. It's unfair to judge him on one performance.

I've watched and listened to the whole of that show, his song Belief and his well...I say rendition of Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and I have heard more than enough. People actually have the audacity to criticise Joe Satriani on lacking emotion but this man is a blues player. He needs to stop taking teenyboppers virginities and being sleazy with women, go back and listen to his favourite artists then work on making those notes have feeling. He may be successful but he's certainly not famous for his playing in the UK.

Some of those favourite artists have praised Mayer continuously throughout his career including BB King, Clapton, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Chuck Leavell and even Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar tech (Renee Martinez) came out of retirement to tour with JM. Judging by the respect he's earned in those circles, I'd hardly call him 'terrible' but of course you are entitled to your opinion.

With regard to 'feeling', that in many ways is very subjective. Some feel Satriani or even Bonamassa are too technical for them, others don't. You may not respond to the way that Mayer plays but many do.

I think it's important to consider also that JM is a blues influenced pop artist rather than an out and out 'blues player' so perhaps comparisons to players like Satriani are the wrong types of comparisons to make? Jeff Beck has said that Mayer reminds him of solo Clapton so maybe that's a more apt comparison to make. (I'm not saying JM can play as well as Clapton btw but they're alike in terms of their solo pop music being blues informed).

That's a fair point you make sir, blues is fragmented as is guitar music altogether. That's my beef though, he plays even popular style blues too technically in my opinion. His guitar didn't even sound tuned properly, to my ears just flat and awful and very neat in the worst way. Then on that video when BB's Lucille kicks in, the playing is way too mismatched to be full of feeling or harmonious from both sides. Solo Clapton, even reading an interview from himself admitted to going through an identity crisis throughout the 70's and 80's. So that's probably not a glowing reference from Jeff Beck.
