Calvin Harris - a formula?
Is it just me or has his music gotten quite samey? It's gotten to the point now where I can tell exactly what's coming next in his songs. Does he use some sort of formula or template as the basis of all his songs?

His new album however I'm unsure of how it will go. I Loved 'Bounce' & 'Feel So Close' but 'Lets Go' is just awful then we had 'We'll Be Coming Back' which I like even though it was a bit samey. 'Sweet Nothing' for me is one of his worst songs imo, it just wont even grow on me. I think as in the template part its because his songs don't have a chorus as such the 'chorus' is a tune and not words. i.e. his songs aren't remembered for the lyrics but more for the tune...if that makes sense. |

Calvin Harris reply - who cares man I'm making a stash load thanks & the kids seem to keep buying it - why change the formula.

Maybe samey when he produces for other artists, but his own work seems pretty quirky.

Yeah his older material had way more going on....now I think he just all about the melody. Notice how all of his newer stuff tends to be based off one really simple catchy melody, and the rest just amplifies that....If you listen to any of the lyrics none of them really make any sense, it's more about the sound/vibe now....
I don't mind the new direction because the production is really great, but I feel like he needs to change his style again if he wants to stay relevant....I think his work with Dr. Luke/Cirkut on WHYB and Supernatural by Ke$ha sounds good and different so who knows... |

To be fair Calvin did practically start the whole dance-pop trend with I'm Not Alone. Most songs in the charts are just rip-off's of that. The only problem is, he's not doing anything different either so he's losing the respect that he used to get quite quickly, especially when he's doing songs with Cheryl and Ne-yo.

must come from his days working in M&S stacking the shelves with the same products just like his music stacking the charts with the same product with different singers.......
