I agree, those pics do look quite good, nowhere near as ugly looking.

I can think of several reasons for buying the super slim

1. Uses less power

2. Will run cooler, cooler the better with games consoles

3. No more lost disc in the event of YLOD

4. Smaller, lighter design

5. 500gb HDD

6. 12 months warranty

7. New controller

8. Cheaper to buy - major PLUS!!!

Plenty of reasons to replace a dodgy YLOD prone 40gb phat, with a trade in, I think it would make good sense before the old models finally dies... because it will

So, the "wallet friendly" 12Gb version is €230, or about £185.

Last week I picked a 320Gb slim for £179.

Boy, am I glad I didn't wait for this.

HMV selling for £185 and £250 for 500Gb.

Amazon is still selling the 160Gb for £185.

What a joke.

They've priced it just $50 less than the Wii U in the US, are the mental?

I brought the 360S & sold my old 360 to a friend for £50.

My reasons for doing that was not only that I thought the 360S looked better but also because I wanted the HDMI port which my original 360 didn't have.

In terms of the PS3-SS I won't be getting one as I think it looks a bit ugly to be honest. Im sticking with my original style PS3 for now, If that shows signs of dying on me I'd probably buy a slim.

Can this new PS3 take advantage of the full speed of Solid state hard drives?

Looks ok, should be cheaper though, especially the entry level one.

That is the RRP. The RRP on the 320gb is about £230. Wait until amazon and the rest put them up to see if there are any decent savings.

According to Sony there is no RRP in Europe.

Quote:
“With regards to price, we no longer set an RRP, instead, that will be dictated by individual retailers themselves,” says the statement. “In terms of the overall hardware offering, we’re adding value (referring to the boosted hard drive size), and via a large selection of individual hard & soft bundle packs, such as FIFA 13, Assassins Creed 3, and Wonderbook: Book of Spells etc. on the run up to Xmas and beyond.”

The pricing is disappointing.

What are Sony thinking about not offering no RRP.

There will be a wholesale price, so technically that will set the price range.

Notice nintendo did not set a uk rrp either. The EU passed laws preventing price influence from manufacturers and some have them have got silly and ott about it.

It's no cheaper than the current slim and is fugly IMO.

Even if I was buying a PS3 now I would go for the slim before this.

IGN UK guys have done an unboxing vid here.

It looks worse than in the pictures, I think it's an ugly and cheap looking machine. That sliding lid is something else. The slim is actually nice looking looking in comparison and with the price I honestly don't know what Sony are playing at.

It's pretty sad that the original launch day model is vastly superior in every single aspect to this version (plus they look great). They couldn't even be bothered to add an extra USB port to two on the back of this new machine, something that is needed. It wouldn't of hurt surely?

I have to agree, the slide opening mechanism just seems so old fashioned, I really dislike it.

My PS3 has 4 USB ports, a Card Reader, PS2 compatibility, Slide Loading BD Brive... If this is the future of playstation products you can count me out.

You can imagine the dust build up in that corrugated top, mini brushes at the ready for cleaning that.

I was optimistic about the new slim, now I've seen that unboxing I wouldn't want one, that sliding disc cover is pretty gross.

I like the overall size and design of the machine, its let down badly by the crap top design and sliding cover.

Hey 2D, after all the stick the new Metro on the 360 has been getting, Sony go one better and f*** up the machine all together!

Bang on Sony

Yeah that's my biggest complain, they should have kept with the matt top of the slim with the slide in mechanism for the BD drive.

If this was like £50+ cheaper for same storage because if it I would understand but so far it doesn't look any cheaper.

If I needed a new PS3 today I would go out and buy a slim while I could.

The case maybe but the original model was a power hog with an unacceptable failure rate.

Game are offering the new PS3 superslim 500gb & Fifa 13 bundle for £124.99 (Half price) when you trade in your old slim PS3/Xbox 360 console. Not a bad offer considering Fifa is around £40..

I think Sony's plan is to keep the price of the super-slim high for the next few months while the slim is still in the supply chain. If the super-slim was too cheap, then the remaining stocks of slims simply wouldn't sell.

Once all the slims are gone, and the next-generation looms ever closer, Sony will be able to slash the price of the super-slim very quickly. This can be used to either divert attention away from competitor launches or simply to increase PlayStation ownership generating brand-loyalty which they will hope spills into the PS4.

(BTW, I hate these slim, super-slim, phat descriptions, but how else are we supposed to distinguish between the bloody things)

The quest then remains, how did "mummy" and "daddy" create such an ugly "baby"
