New Prince song "Rock & Roll Love Affair" Listen Now!
A new song appeared on Chicago radio yesterday by the purple one who's in the middle of promoting his upcoming touring residency in the area, you can listen to the new track here:
http://www.drfunkenberry.com/2012/09...ir-listen-now/ If that one doesn't work try this one: http://soundcloud.com/pk2/rnr-affair It's not the most memorable track but it's very listenable I think. It reminds me a lot of some of his 80's stuff which is always a good thing! It sounds quite reminiscent to Take Me With U from Purple Rain actually. What do you think of the new track? |

I like it. It has quite an 80s feel which is no bad thing

Now there's an example of an artist who's best is well and truly behind them.

Of his older stuff. Purple Rain and Sign O' The Times are two genius albums..this shows he's a shadow of his former self and should call it a day
or the gold experience, exodus and the truth? |

Urgh what happened to him? he was once the star of his generation. Now he is just some bizare mess.
Its a shame when this happens. Some artists were only meant to be stars for a short time. Prince is one of them. Just like Bowie I suppose. |

Didn't like the Rainbow children except for She loves me 4 me, haven't heard one night alone properly and that applied to NEWS and xpectations. I have heard musicology, 3121,20ten and Planet Earth and they all just confirmed to me that he is a performer that is well and truly past his best
we know he has at least a couple of albums in the can ready for release, but whether he puts them out or not is another story. we know from tracks like pfunk that he can still make something as good as anything he's done before, so he's far from over if you look back at some of his biggest hits, they don't really follow the normal patterns of commercial music. when doves cry has no bass in it at all, and that was a huge hit. kiss is very sparse. in fact he gave that song away. it was originally a short accoustic guitar demo. nothing compares 2 u was given away to the family and became most famous as a cover version. manic monday was another throwaway that didn't even make the final cut of the protoge album it was recorded for, and he gave it to someone else who had a number 1 hit around the world. he has his biggest hits when he isn't trying. it's when he does try to make a hit album that it doesn't work, at least not these days. but when he leaves it behind and does music for the sake of music you have great stuff like rainbow children, ONA and NEWS. not to everyones musical taste, not commercial by any means, but some of his best work. and he did all that great stuff in the last 10 years. if he didn't fart around with name changes and all the record label issues he would have sold considerably more. but then he shifted about 20 million copies of his last album in a week, 3.5 million in the uk on a single day alone, and got paid upfront, his previous album sold a pile in a single week, the album before that sold 3.5 million in a single day with all money upfront and the album before that was number 1 for weeks on end in the states, so when you think in those terms, commercially he's far from finished. his shit new music sells more than his good new music. so who's really wrong? if you made a record that sounded like shit and it sold 20 million copies, literally 100 times more than what you may consider some of your best work, what would you do? fortunate prince does both, so we get the good, the bad and the ugly. did you ever hear purple and gold? the new track isn't as good as pfunk or even the rerecording of xtraloveable but it's better than hot summer or rich friends, so it's an improvement at least |

I actually think this is a lot better than some of his recent stuff. It does have an 80's pop sound like his older stuff like Rasberry Beret. I wasn't fond of his experiments with hip hop or when he has long rock/blues guitar solos. But the only problem is that it doesn't seem like it has a chorus with a hook. It's a song with just verses. I kept waiting for a chorus to kick in but it never happened.

another new track out today to coincide with the chicago tour dates. it's a rehearsal jam of old friends 4 sale with the new horn section, using mostly the original version of the lyrics rather than the crap lyrics he changed for joe cockers proposed version. if he just raided the vaults for the old unreleased tracks like that and rerecorded and released those he would do pretty well

This is what I was worried about when I posted the thread about new Prince songs.
This just sounds bland and weak and a pale imitation of his early songs. I want to like it but I feel I'd have to force myself too. |
