Strange numbers on Caller Display
TraceT

Anyone ever had numbers like the following show up on their landline Caller Display?
+1140
+1095
+1052
+501

I usually lookup numbers I don't recognise first on whocallsme.com, but it says these numbers aren't long enough.
I usually add numbers from telemarketers that are shown to my barred list on my phones.

[Been on TPS for years, doesn't make a lot of difference these days especially as most come from overseas, and I know it doesn't effect them].

You can program any old number you like as the CLI with many business switchboards. If I knew your number I could program my work phone to make it look as if I was calling you from your own number if I wanted. These numbers are probably just a random series of digits stuck in there to disguise who is really calling. And of course they are often too short to be used on a barring list as well.

I would doubt a legitimate company would use techniques such as these. I have a feeling that it is a regulation that they have to provide a legitimate number as the CLI anyway. So chances are it is some scam call or other.

Seems the only way to get rid of calls like this is to invest in devices like TrueCall to screen your calls for you. They answer the call silently (as far as you are concerned) and prompt the caller to announce themselves and drop the call if they don't.

Oh and TPS does affect callers from overseas. But only if they are calling on behalf of a UK company. So if you do get an unsolicited call from a UK company using an overseas call centre they can still be reported to TPS. Of course TPS is only any good if companies play by the rules and what scammer is going to do that?

Thanks chrisjr,

Sounds like it's just aswell I don't answer calls I don't recognise then. I let the answer machine pick up calls I can't barr.
It's only recently I've seen numbers like those on the display.
