First of I loved A town called mercy and I don't think that because I have never even seen Westworld but a a few men from work say it was and I have to ask was it similar?

In terms of the setting and a cyborg it's similar, but other than that there really isn't enough to call it a rip-off.

Dear points of view,

The story bore almost no relation to that in Westworld.

In Westworld a very robotic Android dressed as a cowboy went on a rampage in a future theme park due to technical failure.

In Town called Mercy a man with cyborg parts hunted his nemesis in the actual wild west.

Superficial similarity only. And even that - so what?

That must be what the fuss is about and I would hardly call that a ripoff.

you might as well say back to the future part 3 was a rip off of westworld for all the similarities there are (or indeed aren't as the case actually is...).

I've heard several different people individually claim it's a rip off of several different shows and films, so no.

No TLC1098. In terms of it's story it was nothing like Westworld. A Western and a 'robot' thats about it in the similarity stakes.

Its like saying it was a rip off Mork and Mindy because the spaceship was an egg!! .... Nanu Nanu...

The guys at work were trying to sound clever but thats guys at work for you

That's exactly what it is, "thumbs up if you heard their stuff before they were mainstream" .

Well, Doctor Who has ripped things off a lot more blatantly than that in the past! But usually the plots and scenarios.

I suppose people are tuned into picking up on the basic concept "robot cowboy" and dismiss as rip off without looking further.

They have ripped off. A Christmas Carol.
Narnia.
Pirates of the carribean.
Poltergeist.
Titanic.
Hocus Pocus.
Hotel Babylon.
Star Wars.
Jurassic Park.
King Kong.

LOL the list goes on.

If they knew anything about cinema, they'd know that it was actually a rip-off of Three Amigos! (everyone in town dressing the same to confuse the villain) - which itself was spoof of several films including the Magnificent Seven (the cowardly townfolk finally helping the heroes) - which was itself adapted from the Japanese film Seven Samurai - which itself was adapted from stories read by Kurosawa - with a bit of High Noon (lone Doctor facing the villain at noon) and a smattering of High Plains Drifter (stranger arriving out of the blue and saving the town) for good measure.

The fact that the villain was not (entirely) human was all-but irrelevant to the setting - it just made for interesting visuals whilst adding a sci-fi twist with the story of why he wanted revenge - unlike Westworld (and Futureworld) where the entire plot hinged on the inhumanity of he androids.

If any film could reasonably be compared to Westworld, it would be Jurassic Park (same writer, same plot but substituting "badly designed" dinosaurs for badly designed machines) - but all of them can be said to have been lifted from the far older stories of "The Mummy" which also centres around people using modern technology and ignoring warnings that they are crossing a line in terms of messing with something "fundamental" - thereby releasing a killer that pursues them relentlessly.

(Apart from that, if they ever do another "A good man..." type episode where the Doctor calls in a few favours and needs some help, I'm voting right now for the Gunslinger to be one of his posse)

PS - A good man goes to war is very VERY much "an homage" to The Magnificent Seven.

Surely the basic premise is that of Frankenstein? Creating a monster who then relentlessly pursues the creator, with innocent casualties on the way. The end even had the beginnings of being the same, except the creator killed himself, and the monster didn't.

Surely that's The Brain of Morbius.

(I can see this becoming a never ending 'homage' thread)

Goes back much further than that - the Golem in ancient Jewish mythology is probably the earliest known today and there are similar stories of man trying to take the "god-owned" role of creator in Greek and Roman myths - Talos being best known of those cos he appeared in Jason and the Argonauts (alongside Patrick Troughton, of course).

I just stuck to cinematic, Western influences for the episode rather than those only applying to "the creature".

Partly - but it's also a variation on the old truism that there's no such thing as an old joke, just an old audience. If you were a 10 year old kid watching last weeks episode, that may well be the first time you've seen that plot used.

Bear in mind that DW fans are likely to have a greater interest in and knowledge of sci-fi movies than people who don't like or watch the show. Those people probably couldn't tell you anything in-depth about the plot of Westworld - any more than I could if asked to describe Bridget Jones' Diary (something about a sulky woman with big pants).

What are you talking about? It's clearly a Spartacus rip-off! I mean, come on — people all pretending to be some other guy, and all that sand?
