What on earth has happened to music?

Songs that reach number one now are HORRIFIC!

Its literally the same line over and over and over again

No verse, no bridge, just the same line and the same beat!

Repetitive crap i my opinion!

Tulisas song 'young' is prob the one that grates on me the most!

There is no art to music anymore, whats worse is people are buying it!

Proper songs please

There is, it's just commercial music has become so much more easily produced and of course there's been this whole "dance pop" era for the past few years.

There's just less variety in the charts, you can still find good new music... to be fair, the album charts are a better indication of "good mainstream music". You'll get a lot more variety in the album chart than the singles chart.

Either that or just hunt round music blogs, there's always good new music to find

There is plenty of art to music, it just isn't in the charts. There are many fantastic independent musicians and musicians on smaller labels who are not getting the attention they deserve. Thankfully, due to services like Spotify and Last FM that is changing. More and more people are turning away from the drivel in the charts and looking to the independents for true listening nirvana.

I agree, OP. I've hardly liked any "chart" offerings this year, single AND album wise. I think this has been one of the worst years for music that I can remember.

Luckily, my taste in music is extremely wide so I have plenty of other stuff I can listen to when the mainstream disappoints. Some of my favourite artists are oldies and indies, and I love instrumental stuff too while enjoying folk music and easy listening from time to time. I can't imagine relying purely on chart music, and to be honest I think those who do lack imagination and aren't actually music fans, more like easily manipulated consumers.

What kind of music are you into, OP? Perhaps the good people of DS can recommend you something you will enjoy.

There's lots of good music out there but you're looking in the wrong place.

Most good music doesn't get anywhere near the charts.

I agree wih you OP it is full of the same sort of rubbish churned out over and over. The best idea is to switch off the music channels and abandon the charts completely!

It's been like this for some time. Very little genuine creativity makes it into the singles chart these days. Music fans should try and avoid them where possible.

It becuase everything now days is manufactured.

There is no alternative.

For good music you have to do to BBC 6 music or You Tube.

Avoid MTV and Radio 1.

People can slate me if they wan't I don't care.

Ok so, I have come across an artist. I saw her live in Manchester last week and she was a breath of fresh air. Wanna know what you guys think. Her voice is very different and she has this one song called Gutter Boy that is an acoustic Blues song. She did two covers also, one was the monkey song from the jungle book, the other was an upbeat version of Why Dont Ya Do Right by Peggy Lee. I have stalked about a bit and found a music teaser of hers on Reverb Nation.. also found her old YT account from when she was a teenager under her old name. Shes working with an independent label at the moment so I thiiiiiink shes releasing some stuff soon!

Chart music is generally the McDonalds of music. It's all the same whereever you go. Record companies emulate each other. Whatever is popular, they'll jump on the bandwagon. Usually they'll hire the same producers so naturally you'll get the same old stuff.

lol..i knew this would crop up..

the point the op was making (and its one i agree with) is that they are lamenting the lack of good music in the charts, whereas there used to be good music in the charts.

i mean, why must we 'look for it'? when the charts have always been the showcase for what was happening at any one point in time. many would say the best music was always found away from the charts, and this is a compelling argument, however the charts always reflected the wider sceen.

plus, i dont get why 'good music' should ignore the charts as they are still regarded as the main showpiece reprisenting whats happening. it makes no commercial sense to do so and dont delude yourselves into thinking they are in it for artistic reasons, people are making music to make money.

All you can do is blame the people who are buying it. If they like crap then the record companies will provide it.

The charts are for kids or people who dont appreciate real music these days, gone are they days when you can get 30 out of 40 good records in there. Just look elsewhere or listen to older music, which is what I do Let the kiddies listen to their manufactured pap

tbh that has always been an accusation made against the charts, even in times we now regard as 'classic eras'.

I wish we had some actual data of the chart single buying demographic. Has it actually shifted younger?

I think the best way would be to filter out the junk is make the chart around 60-75% sales and perhaps appoint a jury for the remaining 25-40%. Works in Eurovision, and would allow some unknown artists to get a placing in the top 40.

That wouldn't make any difference to the charts overall. Even in the top 1000 on iTunes, you see hardly any unknown artists, and when it is, it's usually an underground rapper or dubstep/D&B producer.

Sorry but why should you avoid Radio 1? Obviously. It has alternative music which are far away from the charts just like 6 Music and YouTube. I say avoid Capital or any music channels, although it should be obvious nowadays.

Not literally! That word gets used incorrectly. Anyway, I agree that some tracks are very repetitive. I'm fed up with the lazy trend of just having a chorus of "Oh oh oh oh oh...". JLS, Britney Spears, The Wanted, Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen, I'm looking at you...and maybe a few forgotten others.
