Was it a marriage of convenience or did he really want to commit to River and found a way of doing so, in a round about way

There wasn't any kind of official, legal or religious representative there either - just Rory giving his consent, so I don't think there's any kind of official standing to it anyway.
It was just two people committing themselves to each other. The words were both theirs, even if one of them was inside another person at the time.

As I've said before when the queestion of the legality of the marriage of the Doctor and River has been raised, we don't know what the legal form is on Gallifrey. Maybe that's how they legally marry. You have to fill in the gaps, johnny!
And the Doctor was certainly there, and saying the words, so I don't see the problem if he was wearing a Tesselecta suit.

erm - it was a ruse so that River knew he'd survive.

Can you please stop blaming the Doctor for everything that seemingly goes wrong with Amy, Rory, and River please?
What about Kovarian and the Silence? Surely, they're more responsible?
Or the Vashta Nerada/virtual world River goes to?
