Silly question about repeats of series 7

I've just cancelled my Sky HD package and when I lose the channels I will lose anything I have recorded from the HD channels apparently. This means I'll lose the first 3 episodes of this season. I've set up the recorder for BBC1 for the rest of the series but I like to keep the whole series on my Sky box until I can afford to buy the boxset (which won't be til long after it's released)

So, does anyone know when they will be repeating series 7? I did warn you this was a silly question

Are you sure they are deleting even those shows recorded from Free To Air channels such as the BBC? Rather than just those recorded from the Sky HD channels you were paying extra for?

I don't have any form of sky, so am not familiar with it. But for some reason I thought the rule was their boxes must allow you to see the FTA stuff without subscription.

As I say, I'm no expert on satellite tv. Might be worth checking though.

So even if the OP is continuing to pay Sky for the "Sky+" part of the service (i.e. ability to record the channels to which they have access), they will stop him watching things previously recorded from a FTA HD source? Even though they will continue to have access to the FTA HD channels even after cancelling the "HD" element of their Sky package?

Gits.

Sorry - bit off topic for Dr Who forum. Sorry OP - I don't know what the repeat schedule is likely to be.

I think I'll carry on not using a subscription based system for recording telly.

If the OP has only cancelled their Sky HD package, but still has an SD subscription of any sort, they will still be able to play content from Free to Air channels such as BBC1HD.
It's only if they have no Sky subscription at all that they will lose the ability for their Sky box to play and record.

Oh right. Not Gits then. I take it back, Evil Murdoch Empire!

The OP said they'd only be losing ability to watch HD recordings, as opposed to ALL recordings. But maybe what Sky meant was that they will block viewing of recordings of all HD channels EXCEPT those recorded from FTA HD channels?

You can only playback Sky+ recordings made from subscription channels if you have a current subscription to them (i.e. you can view them "live").
Recordings from free channels, whether they are SD or HD, can always be played as long as you have a Sky+ subscription, which comes free with any other subscription.

Thanks Dave H. Looks like the OP was misinformed. I got interested because I might need to sort Sky installation out for an elderly relative. As it happens I don't think they willl pay for extra HD but will want to record FTA HD stuff. So I'm grateful for your clear explanation. Will come in handy.

And the OP will be happy not to have to wait for repeats.

Thank you for clearing that up for me guys So I can continue to record Doctor Who on BBC HD even after I lose the HD package? That is brilliant.

It's a silly thing to worry about but it was the only concern I had about cancelling Sky HD. I should have worded my question better to the people at Sky, the woman I was talking to probably thought I meant channels like Sky One HD Silly me.

4 years ago as long as you paid Sky a + subscription then you could access whatever you recorded, even if it was on a channel you could no longer access. I would assume it is the same nowadays.

Unless he transferred them to disk.

oops - misread, thought he'd binned them all.
Hmm, as BBC is free to air he should (in theory) keep the recordings.

That has NEVER been true!!!

Or rather you can "access" the recording to the point when it starts to play - then it will notice that it cannot decode it!

You keep any recordings - for as long as you like!

Playing them involves BOTH subscribing to the channel (not an issue with FTA or FTV channels) AND having Sky+ functionality enabled (free with ANY subscription, £10.25 otherwise)

Which you could argue is exactly the same as downloading a recording from a peer to peer service, so would be legal as long as you didn't then share the files. Awfully grey area though.

a mate of mine missed a payment to sky.sky cut off all the pay channels and he could not access any of the recordings on his hard drive while he was cut off.i just have a hard drive dvd recorder attached to my sky box to avoid these problems.
