What a strange world we live in when a man microwaves an iPhone and films it for the viewing pleasure of others

That (simple) investigation along with asking people I know and trust tells me that the problem is not massive and definitely not to the scale (millions) that you talk about.”

Haha! So you counted every single response to this on google? Or did you just pop on to one forum and count the responses, because as far as i can see there are about 39,400,000 on google. Now, many of them will be repeat posts, replies etc but please don't kid yourself. The back was NOT scratch resistant so like any other phone, it will scratch.

Good god! Some people will do anything to defend Apple!

My htc legend was the only phone I think I never worried about breaking it was so slippery i would almost drop it daily but it was like a little tank.

My note because of the size gives the impression that it would break giving it a hard stare.

What a silly comment. I have no reason to defend anyone because I do not even own an Android or Apple phone. I actually started reading these forums for information to help my decision.

If you use google to search it not only gives you the result but if it is a forum, it tells you the number of replies. It takes about 10 seconds to look.

But I used your logic instead, so I searched of 'scratches on back of samsung s3' and it gave me over 6M responses. That makes it a major problem on that phone I assume.

My blackberry has been dropped so many times the back doesn't actually fit properly anymore, but it still work (which is a shame)

Yup, 6 million compared to what? 39million

Anyway, i was merely saying my phone scratched within 10 seconds from being out the box. And, being non scratch resistant glass it will obviously scratch. Instead i get pounced on like anyone else when they dare to point out a flaw in something apple...

Not hard to understand now is it?

I would expect more comments on the iphone, it is a far more popular phone.

Anyway, happy to more on as i had already determined that aspect would not drive my decision.

All I can say is that I seem to see more iphones with cracked screens than any other phone by far (I don't know which version because I'm not familiar with iphones). It could be due to greater popularity, but it certainly makes me wary.

I have to agree, I have never know somebody one hundredth as unlucky as Stiggles. If I were him I would go and sit in a dark room and never come out.

The s3 would have been better with an aluminium back if its supposed to be samsungs high end phone.

I was surprised now easily the screen broke but from that video it had to hit the floor at the corner.

I have always thought with these drop tests they should be don't under more scientific conditions (like at least 5 of each phone being dropped from exactly the same height and angle onto exactly the same floor surface by robot)? Even when the S2 (also made out of plastic) beat the iPhone it was still not done in these conditions.

Magnesium alloy tends to be the best metal but, glass houses and all that, metal is not great for mobile radio, wifi and GPS signals.

I suspect the real premium material is kevlar ( aramid stuff)
It also seems aluminium is one tenth the cost of a plastic. The cost is in the assembly when complex.

Almost confirming the advice to stick with the white and not buy the black iPhone here is a message from an Apple VP.

"Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. This is normal,"

If that is true to what is said it certainly means too many people are taking theirs back and complaining.

Comments from Apple are rare and for a reason.

Add to that, "putting it down wrong" and "opening the box wrong".

All I can say is for God's sake don't watch Top Gear!

In actual fact I'd advise that anyway, unless you get off on watching middle-aged bores carrying on like the sort of superannuated teenagers who think farting in church is hilarious and dangerously subversive.

1 drop test proves nothing.

Also with phones coming out the box scratched i think the quality has in fact got worse.

Be interesting to see it tried with the HTC One X or the One S which is much more comparable in size. I've dropped my One S a few times onto concrete (not on purpose) and it has survived with just some slight marking to the top.
