Can One Direction outsell Westlife and Take That?
I've heard that one direction already accumulated more than 12 million record sales so far in 2 years now (and still counting), ARE THERE POSSIBILITIES for them to overtake WESTLIFE, or at least TAKE THAT in record sales?... considering the fact that they got the usa market big, unlike with westlife and take that who did not.

There's a possibility that they could outsell the likes of Take That and Westlife if they keep this kind of momentum BUT I can't see them ever overtaking the sales of The Backstreet Boys or The Spice Girls.

Time will tell. I think the turnover in pop seems quicker now.
Westlife did exceptionally well considering that there wasn't a songwriter amongst them and they were relient on covers - I don't think that could happen today. |

I had no idea they had sold so much, although I think it's interesting that 8million of the sales are for their singles and just 3 million for the album (1million DVD sales).
Take That are still going and when they release new material they're likely to do well again, so I don't think One Direction will catch as I don't think they'll last long enough to close the gap that TT will keep trying to extend. As far as Westlife are concerned I think OD could beat them worldwide because they broke America, but I don't think they'll catch their sales in the UK. I guess it'll depend on how long OD can last, no doubt their next era will be big, but it's whether they can sustain it for their 3rd & 4th which most boybands struggle with, but Take That & Westlife managed. |

It's hard to predict as record sales are dire compared to TT and Westlife's day.
But I see their video for their new song has almost 10mill views and that's for 2 days! If they translate teven just half of that o record sales then sure they will outsell them |

you're right, 8 million singles (amazing for this and i believe it's all "what makes you beautiful") 3 million for up all night and a million for their dvd. So over all, it is 12 million and still counting. when they release their 2nd album, for sure it's gonna be a hit once more if we will base it on the trend of boyband albums releasing their 2nd album, and undeniably the world is waiting for this... BUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY -SETBACK, i've been hearing a lot of negative reviews about it with "live while we're young" single, being very similar to their previous singles, making it less exciting... and probably if this trend continues for them, they might lose a big percentage of popularity in their 3rd album.. (hopefully not) take that and westlife, really managed to still be on the top of their game after their peak years... especially to westlife with their 14 years consecutive being a band. |

Just to keep things in perspective - Geri Halliwell has also sold 12 Million records as a solo artist..... and people call her solo career a 'flop'.

I don't think so. The demographics they appeal to are different. Times are different.

good thing at this time, one direction is somehow has the monopoly of being the "only" boyband today.. yes there's the wanted, big time rush and all but let us admit that 1d is incomparable to them in terms of worldwide popularity.
for me speaking of boyband popularity, the world can be divided into 3: USA, EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, AND ASIA, whereas BEFORE westlife dominated european countries especially UK, and of course ASIA bsb dominated USA take that in europe also today, 1d holds almost every part of the world... but will they continue to?? LET'S WAIT AND SEE |

never thought take that would have any longevity, even if it was with two phases.
wouldnt have believed westlife would be so popular, after all, they are pretty crap. it is possible that 1d MIGHT outsell them, in time, its unlikely but not impossible. |

I don't think 1D have a chance, record sales are not what they use to be back in the day. They will soon pass their sell by date and another boyband will take their spot.

I dont think they will, but would never say never. Take That for example have sold around 11 million albums in the UK alone in since they reformed, this does not include single sales, a rough figure for their single sales since they reformed are close to 4 million, Take That have also sold huge amounts of dvds, we do know the circus sold over a million dvds and the other are not far off so give or take Take That have built up 20 million sales in 6 years in the UK alone.
One Direction have 12 million which would also include dvds, singles and albums in 2 years and that is worldwide, i dont know how much sales Take That have built up worldwide since 2006 but surely its a couple of million. Taking all that into account i cant see One Direction outselling them unless they continue to keep selling in America as their debut album has sold around 700,000 in the UK which is disappointing when you like at all the hype and press they get. The upcoming new album by One Direction will tell the tale, and it will be interesting to see if they can repeat their American success and also can they increase sales on their debut in the UK. Take That will be back next year and i am positive their new album will be just as successful as their previous releases. I love Take That so im on their side!!!but i do like One Direction and i hope they do well for themselves long term as the UK needs a huge boyband, i would like One Direction to continue but in the back of my mind im always expecting Harry to announce he is leaving as i am sure he believes he can have a solo career, unfortunatly if it does happen i cant see any of them achieving any major success and certainly not long term. While Westlife never ticked my boxes they have done well but i am intrigued to see how Shane Filan will do in his solo career. |

they have 1 song, they repeat it over and over again, they are the most formulaic, unimaginitive, bland, creation ever in pop music.
i can understand someone liking one or two tracks from them, but after that they are so samish. im shocked that anyone can still get pleasure out of such repetitive dirge. |

I think you're right about Take That's next album being another huge success in the UK. Hasn't their last three albums each sold 2 million+ copies in the UK alone? Pretty damn good. |

For One Direction...I can't see them outselling them, but they've got success in America and if they can continue that it will help them. I don't think they'll have the longevity that Take That and Westlife have (had), but anything is possible. |

![]() they had overcome the boyband-ending era, even they aged we cant deny that they are still successful and that is because your opinion might be wrong.. yes they might be formulaic, unimaginitive, bland, but WHATEVER SONG THEY SING... IT IS A HIT.. because they are one of the best sounding-male group ever... one thing that other band might not have..
