Lovefilm Instant- error only when using HDMI!

Hi

Got a weird (recent) problem with my laptop- when using Lovefilm Instant, it loads fine on my laptop. As soon as I plug it into the TV via HDMI, then it either stops (if it was running) or won't load the film, giving me the Retry? message.

It's any film, any browser but interestingly if I connect my gf's laptop via VGA cable, it works fine.

Anyone experienced this before? Am in contact with Support, but it's slow going.

TIA

HDCP copy protection perhaps? Maybe your laptop isn't negotiating HDCP properly with the TV? Using VGA bypasses HDCP which may explain why that works.

There may be something in the config of your laptop regarding HDCP so could be worth investigating what options it has. It could be as simple as HDCP is off and it will all start working when you turn it on.

HDCP: High Definition Content Protection;

http://www.digitalconnection.com/faq/HDTV_12.asp

An intrinsic part of the HDMI standard, prevents HD copying of content protected material.

Is the streaming of (definitely not) HD content covered and/or affected by this?

It's copy protection. The same thing happens with my laptop when watching blu-ray discs - they won't play if I have the HDMI cable connected to the TV. Most annoying!

I figured this may be the case- presumably to stop you connecting via HDMI to a recording device?

Annoying, as we can still watch using my gf's laptop via VGA cable to the same TV.
