Ipod v washing machine

Hi

I managed to put my daughters Ipod through the washing machine in her shorts pocket about 10 days ago. I've tried the tricks of leaving in a warm place to dry out and have had it in a bowl of rice, to a limited degree of success. When the ipod is placed on the dock, she can still play all her music. However, the screen is dark and the battery is showing conflicting messages. Firstly it says "connect to power". Connect it to power and the battery shows the "charged" symbol. If you twiddle around with the connector, it briefly flashes a battery with a red line at the bottom, then the charging symbol, then back to the charged. Does it sound as if the battery is totally shot or there may be some washing power gummed up in the workings? I have read where some people say rinse in distilled water to cleanse out the washing powder.

We do have a spare unsued ipod (these are 4th gen nanos) as my son upgraded to a touch. The nanos both have the kids names and phone numbers engraved on the back, an offer from apple a few years ago. So one thing we could do is swap the insides from the unused one to the damaged one. I have found a step by step pdf on both changing the cover and changing the battery (although the latter looks more difficult due to delicate soldering needed).

Option 1: take out insides and try to cleanse.
Option 2: place in distilled water to rinse, leave to dry and try again.
Option 3: Switch insides completely.
Option 4: Switch screen and battery.

Does anyone have any advice on this please

One goes round and the other is more square.

Joking aside it is possible the connecting pins now have some corrosion coating.
Unpowered I'd personally try a tiny amount of alcohol like cleaner on the lead that plugs in connecting it a few times.

Using wd40 as a cleaner can be risky.

there should be online youtube vids showing how to dismantle case .........

....... ths main thing will be wet detergent suds trapped inside case. not a good idea at all to switch on until compleetely dried out. when finally dry, try out. if working properly then i wouldnt bother about any white detergent deposits on the chips just leave them and put it back together .......

..... wet suds trapped inside case will have electrolytic conductivity which is the main problem ......

.....guiding principle is minimum intervention needed. dont do more than necessary.

i think the screen is electroluminescent panel ? maybe not damged if youre lucky. but operating electrical devices filled with water NOT a good idea !

Thanks. Think we'll be gently taking apart and switching insides. Have ordered a set of tools to do so.
