Doesn't seem to be any reduction in price in regards to pay monthly.

iPhone 4 8GB = Free on £36pm
iPhone 4s 16GB = Free on £44pm
Even a damn refurbed 3GS is £34pm
iPhone 5 free from £46

Is it just me or is this pricing ridiculous?

Even as a self confessed gadget geek I've found the cost of upgrading to the new Iphone to be ridiculously expensive. Ive still got the 4 and it does everything i need so i think i'll just keep it.

To be fair the 5 is selling hand over fist so whatever it cost would seem justified.

When I bought my iPhone 3GS (3 years ago) from O2, it cost me £78 for the phone on a (at the time) £35 contract.

I have just bought the iPhone 5 from O2, which has cost me £99 for the phone on a £36 contract.

The pricing seems very similar really at launch taking into account inflation and and upgrade in hardware.

T- Mobile is better as for £1 extra you get unlimited internet .

But that depends on the iPhone variant. Their costs for the 64gb version is astronomical.

And that costs - hence I've ordered one from 3 ( i don't love O2 anymore so am leaving the network)

Yes Apple have a £200 mark up for 64Gb. You can buy an 64Gb SD card for about £30 and put it in an Android or Windows Phone 8 mobile. Thats in addition to the capacity of onboard memory that the phone will have.

If you don't want to pay rip off prices for memory then Apple products aren't for you. They are the most valuable company on the planet for a reason. They have huge profit margins.

True, however Dan Sette's comment regarding the 64GB model's pricing was regarding what the networks charge.

Unless I am mistaken, he said that he is getting a 64GB model from Three rather than e.g. T-Mobile, as T-Mobile (& all the others except for Three) charge a very high upfront fee for a 64GB iPhone 5 on a contract.

e.g. You can get a 64GB iPhone 5 from Three for £109 upfront on a £42pcm contract, whereas T-Mobile charges £219 upfront on a £41pcm contract, Orange charges £210 on a £41pcm contract, O2 charges £250 on a £41pcm contract, and Vodafone charges £229 on a £42pcm contract.

To be honest, that isn't the issue. I want / need / have got an iPhone because it does what I need it to do (and for a valuble facility, for me, which no other phone offers.)

Indeed/ The upfront cost of the phone was largely irrelevant (sorry, I don't mean that to come out how it sounds). I want the features that I require with seamless integration elsewhere.

I'm not going to get into a platform war - I think other phones look very good, and was tempted, but after some research, they don't do what the iPhone does.

I'm leaving O2 for the main reason they give me bucketloads of minutes that I can't use - I have moved house to a non O2 served region of the country. Friends who have other networks have demonstrated that Orange and 3 are the only networks to provide coverage, indoors, at my house. (unsurprisingly as 3 use the Orange network as a fallback on 2G (voice calls) if their network doesn't provide signal.

I'm quite a fan of Orange - I used them with few problems - for many years.

BUT. As I'm committed to one of those two networks I'd be foolish if I then didn't compare the upfront costs on the phone as part of the package. Unlimited data and the ability to tether sealed the deal.

The upfront cost of the iphone 5 on o2 is shocking when compared to the other networks. I'm not interested in the iPhone 5, however if I were I'd have to seriously consider other networks. It would be nice to have unlimited internet but I find the 2gb I have to be more than sufficient. You can also tether on o2 with no extra charges.

I wasn't just talking about the iPhone 5, any iPhone on O2 is way over priced.

Look at the price of this 3GS Refurb http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/pa...B_Black_Refurb £37 per month to get it free, I mean you can get an SGS3 Cheaper

The other side of this (apart from no signal at home) is I currently have unlimited data - but no tethering - on O2. But that is removed if I upgrade through them. Sadly 2gb isn't enough for my requirements/

O2's upfront prices for the iPhone 5 are very similar to those of Orange, T-Mobile, and Vodafone...

e.g.

16GB:

£36pcm, £99.99 upfront with O2
£36pcm, £109 upfront with T-Mobile
£36pcm, £109.99 upfront with Orange
£37pcm, £99 upfront with Vodafone

32GB:

£36pcm, £199.99 upfront with O2
£36pcm, £219 upfront with T-Mobile
£36pcm, £219.99 upfront with Orange
£37pcm, £209 upfront with Vodafone

64GB:

£36pcm, £299.99 upfront with O2
£36pcm, £269 upfront with T-Mobile
£36pcm, £269.99 upfront with Orange
£37pcm, £289 upfront with Vodafone

Three, with The One Plan -

16GB: £36pcm, £79 upfront.
32GB: £39pcm, £89 upfront.
64GB: £42pcm, £109 upfront.

I was thinking more of three's prices. If I were interested in the iphone I'd go for the 64 GB, where I'd be looking at paying £299 upfront with O2, yet I could get it for £109 with three.

Are you on one of the older tariffs?
I remember when I took out my iphone 3G contract I had unlimited internet, but lost that when I upgraded to the iphone 4.

Ah, fair enough. It's just that as you said "the other networks" I thought you mean all the other networks

1163.99 on O2
1117 on 3
Only 46.99 difference over 2 years.

I'm pretty shocked at these prices. Practically a grand for the cheaper Iphone over two years.

I don't really do any streaming outside the house. I just use my 3G for web browsing and checking/replying to emails etc. I may watch the odd youtube/news video but that's it. At home I use the wifi.

iPhone prices are ridiculous because of the rip-off margins Apple enjoy. $400 profit per iPhone 5 according to the Sunday Times so it's no wonder networks have to charge a lot for them.

I'd love to see where this magical T-Mobile deal is.

Their cheapest tariff with unlimited data costs nearly four times as much as that!
