SIMON Cowell is so desperate to revive his ailing X Factor that *tonight he brings on his secret weapon – himself.

The talent boss is hoping his appearance will tempt back the millions of viewers who have deserted the show this season.

He appears at the climax, telling each judge who they will be *mentoring as the programme *approaches the live finals.

And the pop svengali, 52, whose US version of the show is under fire as well, will also call on his globe-conquering One Direction to help.

The teen group has already been booked to perform their new *single Live While We’re Young on both sides of the Atlantic.

And they are now in talks to have bigger roles, including being guest mentors.

Our X Factor source said: “It’s ironic that less than two years ago Simon Cowell made One * Direction’s career and now he’s relying on them to help save his.

“He’s risked everything on making the US X Factor a big hit and it now faces the axe.

“Simon knows One Direction wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the X Factor and he now wants to use their success story to save and promote the show.

“He has ordered producers on both sides of the Atlantic to book in the best guest performers for the live shows.”

Since releasing their debut album 12 months ago, Harry Styles, 18, Liam Payne, 19, Zayn Malik, 19, Louis Tomlinson, 20, and Niall Horan, 19, have become some of the biggest stars in the world.

Their album Up All Night topped the charts in 16 countries, including the US, where they became the first British band to ever debut at No.1.

Add record-breaking DVD sales, a world tour and a new album and the fivesome seem unstoppable.

But while the boys’ careers have gone from strength to strength over the last two years, Simon’s has faltered

He quit American Idol to launch the US X Factor but the first series pulled in just 12million viewers, eight million lower than Idol.

The show now faces the chop after the second series fared even worse. On top of his US woes, Simon is also feeling pressure back home.

The UK X Factor is suffering from its worst ratings in six years.

And his big-budget ITV1 show Red or Black faces the bin after fans deserted in the millions.

Other names set to appear this series include Pink, 33, Leona Lewis, 27, Rihanna, 24, Taylor Swift, 22, and Robbie Williams, 38.

Adele, 24, is also at the top of the hit list.

Most fans watch the performance on YouTube anyway so it wouldn't make much difference. The show is dead and there is no way to revive it.

I don't know why they are making out like it's just X Factor that is going through difficult times. All the Talent shows are.

Just by having them perform is not gonna boost the ratings. It's only really a certain demographic that like them and a lot of them are probably already watching. I'm not doubting that there popular but a lot of people don't really care about them either. If he really thinks that millions will suddenly turn on he is deluded.

I don't agree. Everything they appear on the ratings soar. i.e. Saturday night live, The Today show. Alan Carr. Producers know that and it is why they get good gigs easily

I never watch the X Factor in real time but if there is an act I want to see then I will watch live as I will for them

Gosh, someone is desperate to increase viewing figures!

Sorry, but is this posting supposed to make us tune in tonight? I think the response to this rather proves that the public will do precisely what they want in terms of 'watching' the X Factor - because, these days, we have a choice - and youtube works for many of us.

I'm actually enjoying X factor this year so far, although I still think Tulisa is a dingbat with a brain the size of pea.

But I never watch it live or sit through ads. I just record it and FF to the bits I want to watch - which is the singing.

One Direction? Who cares?

Typical tabloid 'journalism' style. Kind of dated really

or write in his/her sleep on automatic pilot. It's what we call 'bashing out a piece' with no thought whatsoever.

Am I the only person on the planet who is completely bemused by the popularity of 1 Direction? They're so just bland that they make vanilla look exciting. They're not good singers, none of them are good looking (imo) and they're songs are just 'meh'.

I know I'm not the target demographic but I have always been able to see the appeal of many kiddy bands but this lot just make me go
