If I had chosen Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I would've been called out for being predictable.

John, wow...just stunning! I know I've gotta make a long comment about it, but tonight, that was your best performance to date! You sung it with your heart from start to finish and the emotion you gave into that song was like on par with Jessie J herself. Something that rare artists have these days, I now believe that you're gonna make the semi-final after that. What an absolutely fantastic performance, John.

John Wilding

Is this not a rulebreak? First of all Who You are wasn't her debut release, it was Do It Like A Dude and that was first released in 2010? It was a good if not excellent performance but unless I stand corrected, this breaks the rules

John Wilding

I have to admit, i was absolutely blown away. It was just simply outstanding. You are definitely one of the best singers in the whole competition and that was the very first time that you were able to fully utilize you gift as a vocalist. The execution of the vocals were out of this world. You delivered the song perfectly from start to end and the articulation were fantastic. That was simply impressive, excellent job tonight.

Sorry works being a bit hectic managed to get out though boss got another person to cover me.

John Wilding

Yeah I believe like Kev said this is a rule break unfortunately because it was a great song for your voice in my opinion.

Lol. The theme was said to pick a song from an artist that had a debut album/single/etc in 2011/2012. It did not specifically say that i had to pick the debut song form the artist that debuted in 2011/2012.

Good catch, I hadn't even noticed this one myself when I looked through the songlist earlier. I'm afraid it's true, Jessie J debuted in 2010, which violates the boundaries of the theme.

Also, the songs for this theme don't have to be debut singles, it's the artist that matters.

Lol do you guys have comprehension issues? This quote is more than enough to show that it isnt a rule breaker.

Oh I didn't realise it didn't have to be their debut song to be honest but yeah she debuted in 2010

Oh, I never even knew that bit...what a disappointment.

From last week's show:

2: 'New Artists'

A perfect counterpart for the other theme. For this one, you can only pick (covers of) songs by artists that have debuted in 2011 or 2012. In this context, 'debuted' means released their first material. Whether this was an EP, an album or a single doesn't matter, as long as it was actually released and not just posted/leaked on some obscure website.

It says it doesnt matter whether it was an EP, album or single. Her debut album was in 2011. Definitely not a rule breaker based on how the theme was phrased. I can go on and on about how the theme was structured. I would gladly admit the song is a rule breaker but i wont accept the rule breaker when the theme specifically said that i could use that song.

If the host decides that it is a rule breaker then so be it. If Miss Fitz made it through with that rule breaker song, then im sure it wont have any effect on him but ill be really unhappy because the theme was not specific enough to place my song under a rule breaker.

Controversy aside, let's move on with the show. After the controversy that was John Wilding's second performance, it's time for the girls again.

Singing 'Stay Away' by Charli XCX, it's Despina Pilavakis again!

Despina, you pulled it out of the bag for this second song. I wasn't convinced with your first performance, but this one was so much better and it was pure and so effective for your voice, it just played to your strengths, no question. This is the kind of style I could see you doing so great at. I think you're gonna make the Semi's. Good luck with the votes later tonight, but for now, well done.

Perhaps the theme description was a bit vague, but that doesn't take away the fact that I also said "released their first material' in last week's announcement. Jessie J released 'Do It Like A Dude' in 2010, and as that was her debut, the song you have chosen broke the rules (unless Wikipedia is wrong, which I doubt).

Jessie's first material was her single though SD which WAS released in 2010.

Despina Pilavikas

This was also very good Despina, again I thought it would be a poor choice as Charli is very quirky but you really stood out with that song, it was a beautiful choice and perfectly suited to your tone and I just think that tonight is the night you have actually stood out from the crowd, well done Despina, if you don't make the semi-finals it will be a travesty.

Despina Pilavakis

I've been constantly trying to find the right mix between Soul voice and urban into your songs for ages now and tonight I think I have finally cracked it with these two choices tonight. The first showed you just losing yourself in the music and the perfect mix between soul and urban and this song does it again! I'm so happy for you tonight!

Not only was it vague but it didnt specifically say that i had to use her debut single if she released her album in 2011. It meant that if either her EP, single or album was released in 2011 then i could use a song by that artist.

Like ive mentioned that i can go on and on about the way the theme was phrased. Whatever, just carry on with the show.

He means that her debut material whether it was an EP, an album or a single had to be released in 2011/2012, yes Jessie's album was released in 2011 but it was NOT her debut material, her debut material was 'Do It Like A Dude' which was in 2010.

That's your interpretation of that line. Fortuntaly for me, the others interpreted the line the way it's supposed to be interpreted.

But since you won't accept a rule break from me, how about a vote on it?

Question to the judges: Did 'Who You Are' break the rules?

Well I wasn't even aware of it, which shows how little I pay attention to the charts these days.

Despina Pilavakis

That was a much better performance. The song allowed you to show off your vocals much more. I wasnt the perfect song for your tone and style but at least it kinda suited you. I loved the vibe of the song and you sounded lovely. It was interesting and different so well done to you and your mentor.

poor despina the attention being taken away from her performance

But yeah I think everyone else believed that it was a debut single or ep or whatever type of thing done in 2011 or 2012 so I think it does count as a rule break

Yes it did.

While everyone is answering that question, let's listen to the next performance.

The act bringing you that performance is the amazing Michelle Barrett with 'Open Up Your Arms' by Ren Harvieu!
