Boot camp was always my favourite part.... the contestants performing a series of challenges, the arguments as they rehearsed, performing just in front of each other, and the true talent really coming to the foreground.

But now we get the cheesy crowd shots and more solo performances with full backing track and huge audience. It's no different to the auditions, which btw I also think were a huge mistake.

There's no sense of the contestants progressing, from an intimate raw audition in a hotel room with no music, to the rigours and late nights of boot camp and all the peer pressure, to judges houses and finally the 'huge' live performances in front of a crowd.

The whole format is now so samey. Its one arena after another. One backing track after another. One standing ovation after another. And it's not helped by 4 judges who are clearly tone deaf!

Brilliant post, OP!

My feelings exactly! Can't add anything else because you've said it all so well.

I agree with you, I will still watch with one eye on the US one. We have around 5 real nuggets the rest are just filler imo

Boot camp every year was set in this big house in the country until one year a lot of the performances were criticised and then it was held in the arena.

Exactly right. The show is now a huge mess. What's worse is that there's hardly any real talent this time. It's easily the worst year. God, I'd take Cher Lloyd over half of this lot any day!

Absolutely! That's why I love American Idol, the bootcamp is always great.

Hating the way they are mashing up good performances and also adding talking over the contestants actually singing... this happened when melanie mason started singing they automatically cut to her talking in an interview so you couldn't even see the performance what the hell!!!

Me too. It was so refreshing to watch the US version last year and American Idol with an older better boot camp format. Shame that Cowell still insists on the shitty BGT big audition audiences though. I still think that was the start of the end for X Factor.

I was happy when there was no bootcamp audience on the first day and dismayed when the arena filled up for the second..

*applauds* Agree completely. It's a dreadful format. We seem to have heard less singing than any other year.

Although I haven't seen this weekends episodes yet, I'm not sure there was much to ruin. The bootcamp stage has always been unpopular, the first episode in particular usually sets series lows (this being the case in series 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8). I'm pretty sure they've tinkered with it in some way in every single series trying to get it right.

I agree 100%

I don't know anyone who likes the BGT style auditions either, it was way better when they auditioned in front of the judges by themselves.

More money made from audiences, unfortunately.

I used to love seeing contestants progress as well. From singing solo in a small room to the judges, to singing in front of the judges on a stage with a piano at bootcamp, to singing at the judges houses with a piano to then making the huge evolution to a live show TV performance. It made the live shows seem more of an event as it was the first time contestants sang to an audience. Now they're already professionals at singing to audiences by the time bootcamp is over.

You can't even pick up judges interaction at the live auditions either. With the small silent room you could pick up the body language and conversations they had, plus they'd have to hold in their laughter and make up their own opinions but with live auditions they're relying on the audiences to make up their mind for them.

I am another one who completely agrees with the OP. The performances do not progress or appear different now, just songs in front of an audience over and over and over. I will never know why Cowell thought it was a good idea to introduce audiences at the auditions. It was far better before.

I'm glad it's not just me. There's now absolutely no difference between the auditions, boot camp and the live finals anymore. It's all the same. What's the point?

He wanted his big, shocking 'wow, they're surprisingly amazing!' moments, but it's the law of diminishing returns now.. we've seen it all before.. and it didn't help that we've already had the biggest 'wow' moment we could possibly have ages ago... with Susan Boyle (admittedly different show, but you ain't gonna top that reaction).
