New iPad V Galaxy Note 10.1?
Pinko

Hi,

Ok, I'll try to precis this...

I've never owned any Apple product for a whole plethora of reasons I won't bore you with but there ARE reasons. I want to buy a tablet and really LOVE some aspects of the Note as they seem to suit the types of things and applications I want to use it for. However, the 3G enabled version costs £499 and, currently, it's still running on a fairly dodgy operating system which is essentially a cell phone system not a full-on computer operating system. Samsung have 'promised' to update and upgrade this by the end of the year to a full system but Samsung's promises are not always that reliable when it comes to updates/upgrades (I think it's currently running on ice-cream sandwich but I could be wrong about that). Having said that, I use a Galaxy SII phone and find it totally brilliant in every respect.

But... and this is the problem for me... I'm currently with T-Mobile and they are offering a new iPad (32G whereas the Note is only 16G but you can add memory) for around £249 for people who already have T-Mobile contracts, obviously wifi AND 3G - it's a 24 month contract at £25 p/m - so not that cheap really at all but good for initial outlay.

So, here's the question :

My heart says (in fact, it shouts) BUY THE NOTE!! But my head says the iPad is a far better tablet with better spec and all round better everything. Hmm. I have no other compatible products/devices for the Apple (don't even belong to iTunes!) and I have no intention of buying any (know I'll have to join iTunes but apart from that).

My phone runs on Kies Air to connect to computer, shake the phone and it connects automatically (very neat little app) but I have a feeling it won't run on the iPad (a) because Apple and Samsung hate each other and rarely make compatible anythings! and (b) because Apple doesn't run java (I don't think, does it?) So that would be a nuisance.

Does anyone have either of these tablets and, if so, what do you think? Just any input really as I cannot make my mind up which to get and can't afford both!

Thanks.

Hope this doesn't get dragged into another Android v ios war..

For Itunes, its only a program, no big deal, but you can pretty much run without it now as icloud backs up your content to the cloud and you can update over the air too.
You can sync content USB or wirelessly from your PC using many alternatives to Itunes. You didnt really say what you wanted the GB storage for?

Good idea to move to the many cloud accounts, Dropbox. Box, Skydrive, Google Drive etc for sharing content.
They work great for just dropping and sharing with any device. I use one for sharing my books and pdfs, one for office docs, one for other content like app files. tweaks and content I am testing as part of my job etc.

A PC or a remote storage device for me is still important as I have a lot of content to work with. But all the content does not need to be on the Tablet all the time. So, perhaps change your current thought method a bit about use of the storage towards using wireless or the cloud.

Not sure Id agree with you saying Android 'it's still running on a fairly dodgy operating system which is essentially a cell phone system not a full-on computer operating system'
It is on a par with IOS, it suffers from having too many devices that are varied that makes an app developers task much harder on times. Just ask SKY and the BBC, they are struggling to find a common ground on Android at the moment to please everyone, but that's the fast moving world of technology these days.

Any reason you need 3G on the tablet, you should be able to tether it to your phone ?

Regardless of which system being talked about (Apple, Android etc) I would have thought keeping all your devices on the same ecosystem would be sensible. If I were you I'd be getting the Note to complement the SII so you can have cross over.

I have an iPhone and iPad and having them both work in sync is one of the things I love best.

Also, if you buy seperate OS devices you're paying double for the same apps.

Can i throw in an off-topic suggestion and propose the Nexus 7 ?

Bigger than the Note but I can still fit it in a jacket pocket. No 3G but you can tether off any Android phone. VERY quick. Will get updates directly from Google.

.... and all for less that £200

I have an Asus Transformer (TF101) which is a great unit (if you really want a 10" tablet the Transformer series are superb) but I have to say it tends to be the Nexus 7 that I reach for first. Much more portable and 'hand friendly'.

The latest 10.1 tablet doesnt get all that great reviews .... i think they skimped on the screen quality/resolution TBH.

Nexus 7 - great unit

and at that price Im far less worried about carrying it around with me.

Methinks the OP meant IOS. I would disagree with IOS being dodgy but it restricts choice unlike a traditional operating system like Android.

I'm not an Apple fan boy but I will say this as a personal opinion. I use a Samsung Galaxy tab for work and when I looked at buying my own tablet I went for the iPad.

I just think Apple's OS works better on a tablet than Android does, I can't say it's one thing or another just the overall experience.

But I also think Android is a better phone OS than iOS on a phone.

But both do a good job at the end of the day, try and have a good play, watch a few Youtube reviews and make up your own mind.

No, I think the OP meant Android on the Note 10.1...

The bits in bold give the answer to me, £500 for the samsung which i think is overpriced, but £850 on a already overpriced apple product i know where i would be going, plus by the time your contract finishes the ipad will have been reincarnated another 3 times

Get the WiFi version of the Galaxy Note 10.1 [£375] and tether it to your mobile for internet. Even if you don't have a lot of data, adding on extra to your current plan would be a lot cheaper than spending extra money on a 3G tablet and then buying another contract for it.

I thought the Galaxy Note 10.1 had had a bunch of ropey reviews. I read this one from Android Police and I don't think it's the only one:

Yeah, The Verge only gave it 6/10. Mixed reviews depending on the site.

Is the Galaxy Tab 10 a better bet?

Maybe the clue is in the site name.

The same guy also thinks the Note and the Razr M are hilarious
