Poorly chosen 2nd singles from an album
It struck me in one of the Now 82 polls how some artists release a really bad choice for a second single. The one that gave me the idea was One Direction's 'Gotta Be You' - a really weak song with little hook compared to the smash of 'What Makes You Beautiful'.
Another that stays with me is Mini Viva's second single 'I Wish' which I think was released in the summer - its a chill song about regrets from a dancepop female duo, following up on their dance song 'Left My Heart in Tokyo'. Rihanna's 'You Da One' is another that comes to mind. Basically its singles that don't seem to represent the artist, album, or their general direction very well, and can sink the album's momentum or the artist's, especially off the back of a hit lead single. Thoughts? Suggestions? |

Best Example for this would be
Pixie Lott - What Do You Take Me For. |

I dislike the majority of Rihannas 2nd singles aside from Unfaithful. You Da One, What's My Name, Rude Boy & Shut Up & Drive don't do much for me at all and are definitely not the best tracks they could have released from their albums.
Madonnas 'Give It 2 Me' Kylies 'Wow' Scissor Sisters 'Any Which Way' Pet Shop Boys 'Did You See Me Coming?' |

Let It Go - Alexandra Burke....it's a good song don't get me wrong, but it did not represent the album at all, and there are way better tracks they could have picked instead of this song.

Ke$ha - Blah Blah Blah wasn't the right follow up to Tik Tok, IMO.

'You Da One'. I mean, how did her label think THAT was to follow 'We Found Love'?
![]() 'When I Was A Youngster' was a bad choice for Rizzle Kicks too. Probably the worst song on the album. |

Judas after Born This Way was terrible and messed up The Edge of Glory which is the best single of her career. Whatever that song was Scouting For Girls followed This Ain't a Love Song with was terrible too. |

You Da One, certainly.
Sexy Bitch/Chick after When Love Takes Over seemed a bit strange to me, David Guetta should've released One Love or Memories instead as the second single. Good Life by Kanye West also comes to mind. Homecoming and Flashing Lights (and many other songs off that album) were far superior. |

Sugababes - No Can Do (should have been Every Heart Broken) Alesha Dixon - Radio (should have been Baddest Chick/Colour/Cool With Me) Cheryl Cole - The Flood (should have been Yeah Yeah) Leona Lewis - I Got You (should have been Outta My Head) |

Agree with both Sugababes' songs mentioned above! No Can Do and Change were terrible choices. Never Gonna Dance Again deserved to be a single.

We Found Love 2. Talk That Talk 3. Where Have You Been 4. Birthday Cake And Where Have You Been massively underperformed. Everybody thought it would be #1, and it only got to #6!!! Who knows, even Drunk on Love, Cockiness, Farewell or Roc Me Out could've been ACTUAL big hits instead of WHYB. I guess we'll never know now.

Akon - Lonely following Locked Up Pink - Sober following So What Kelly Rowland - Lay It On Me following Down For Whatever Talk That Talk was a great shout for a single, should have been 2nd, then Where Have You Been and then Cockiness. No other songs would have success. I think a lot of you forget that singles main function is to sell an album, so if the fourth single from an album hits number six its no biggie because its album will probably rebound back to the top ten if they've got as far as a fourth single anyway. The albums first singles chart position is the only one that really matters. |

Madonnas 'Give It 2 Me' Kylies 'Wow' Scissor Sisters 'Any Which Way' Pet Shop Boys 'Did You See Me Coming?' And I think Wow was a great follow up to 2 Hearts. In mY Arms should have been the lead single with The One & Wow following after. |
