Someone claimed Henry Byalikov previously told Afterbuzz TV that Shawn and Derek planned to do the Paso/Tango Fusion dance Derek choreographed (but didn't get to dance) as their Favorite dance, but that producers asked them to reprise their Quickstep instead.

As the video of Henry on Afterbuzz is nearly an hour long I haven't tried to listen to check it out for myself, but I don't think Henry would have any reason to lie.

I loved Shawn's freestyle. On that alone she deserves to win.

Thanks for the links

I think Afterbuzz have guests that have the facts, because I watched them a couple of weeks ago and they were telling what goes on behind the scenes and in rehearsals very interesting.

Felt they all really tried so hard and pulled out the stops on their freestyles, think Shawn and Derek will be hard to beat. Although I did feel both Shawn and Derek's dances could have been freestyles. Hoped for a contrast for their other dance, quite a bit of gymnastics in the QS too.

Think of all the dancers Kelly is the one who has come so far as she had no dancing background. So from a ballroom dancing point of view, I am rooting for her, but from an entertainment point suppose Shawn and Derek stood out the most.

Derek and Shawn defied gravity in their freestyle, he certainly pushes and pushes the boundaries.

I want Melissa or Kelly to win.

Dereks smugness at breaking the rules for the "fans" is very annoying for me. I don't think they deserve to win.

100% agree, although I'm mainly on Melissa's side. I love Kelly but I felt like the Freestyle wasn't exactly original, whereas I LOVE "I Was Here" and feel it worked perfectly for Melissa & Tony

They deserve to win on the basis that their performances have been the most entertaining - by miles. I think you are being very harsh on Derek. Firstly, it is impossible to say why they decided to re-dance their quickstep. The conversations they show are clearly a scripted performance. Perhaps it's even true that they were asked to perform it, as suggested above. Regardless, this is not a traditional dancing competition, hence people entering the arena on tripwires or attempting caveman hussles. The "rules" mentioned are often broken by various couples - not just Derek. The judges commenting on it is down to pot luck. The situation isn't helped by the fact each judge has their own interpretation of them, for example the Rumba allows a "catch" but Caryanne was ignorant of this and called Derek out for a rule breakage.
But perhaps he has broken rules. But the marks were taken off and we move on. I would far prefer to then focus on the spectacle of his magical routines rather than to hold some bitter grudge against him for wanting to be as creative and entertaining as possible.
The fact is he has outgrown the show and when he leaves at the end of the season there's no doubt the quality of the entertainment will be hugely diminished.

Absolutely! This win shows that people love actual dancing not gymnastics. So happy for Tony.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with the result. Melissa was grossly overmarked at the end and her flaws were ignored. If Derek and Shawn were forced to repeat their Quickstep, then I'm calling fix. If the show is manipulated to that degree, then what's the point?

Yeah, and I am happy that the couple following the rules won, not by having the freedom to create flashier dances by breaking the rules, and relying on the fanbase to still vote for them.

Congratulations to Melissa and Tony. Fans have been saying for a long time that Tony was deserving of a MBT, and Melissa has done a great job this season.

I think Derek made a tactical mistake by reprising their Quickstep. Viewers already saw it twice, the original performance and an encore the next night and did not need to see it again. Neither did they need to hear the judges express how disappointed they were with the choice and the deliberate flaunting of the rules, even though the directive week 3 was to "push the boundaries...show us something we've never seen before."

The 3 points Shawn and Derek sacrificed by inviting a markdown on the QS rather than an almost guaranteed 30 for the Paso/Tango Fusion dance may have made the difference between winning and losing. Either way, I'm comfortable with the result.

For me I was not invested in who won this year. I would have liked for Apolo to have made it to the finals but it was not meant to be.

I am happy for the Melissa win and I would have been okay with a Kelly win also. I thought they were all very close in ability and effort.

I saw an interview with Derek, he had been honored by the Emmys for his bold and creative choreography. It is good for the network to have one of the pros honored for outstanding choreo. Then in another interview he said he is encouraged by the producers to be "himself" and be daring. Derek said that he choreographs to music, he hears the music and choreos to the music. He says he loves music and that is what drives his choreography. ABC producers like it and I believe they know it creates controversy and interest in the show. What's he gonna do, is he gonna break the rules, will it cost his celeb? It gets people talking. So on the one hand it is good for Derek because he gets the accolades but it makes fans angry because he is coloring outside the lines. Last night one of the choreographers on STYCD (Adam Shankman) said Derek was the best. But he is in the ballroom world where there are rules. Jason Gilkinson has made a name for himself by not following the rules. I think DWTS is not the place to do that. I think of Artem and how he took that risk with the AS with Kara which was a gorgeous dance that the public loved but incurred the wrath of Len and small segment of posters who were not happy about the rule breakage.

If both Shawn and Derek would have preferred to do the paso/tango which was pure dancing and showing Shawn's dancing ability especially dancing in hold and not her gymnastics who knows if it would have a different outcome.

I think Derek will go onto choreograph other things where it will work better for him.

I also read a few articles on Carrie Ann in which I did not know if they were gossip or not so I did not link but basically she is very upset with Len and Bruno because the producers instructed them to be tougher on the scoring and comments this year. She said that Bruno and Len were not upholding the deal and Carrie Ann is left to look like the bad judge.

It seems like there is a lot of stuff that goes on DWTS that is producer driven but it is made to look like the judges, pros and celebs are making the decisions.

By the way, I thought Tony raised his choreo game this year and he did great job with Melissa.

The freestyle that Melissa and Tony did was beautiful. I was not expecting that and I am glad that the judges liked it and I have to believe it influenced voting.

Wow! I'm shocked. There would all have been worthy winners for different reasons, but Kelly was my favourite (alongside Apolo ). In the event, I guess third was about right for Kelly - their freestyle was beautifully done, but uninspired. Perhaps Derek and Shawn suffered from doing two gymnastic routines, so it's interesting to hear they were probably diverted from the paso/tango. I can see the producers preferring not to have two pasos, so perhaps that was an understandable decision.

I think the judges marks are almost irrelevant when they only award 9, 9.5 or 10. The percentage difference must have been miniscule (and I can't be bothered to work it out!). I don't really think the judges should have any impact on the vote for the final, but I realise it would be impossible to have audience only voting and have a results show (with the different timezones)

I liked Melissa's freestyle, but for me it was too lifty. Still it was a brave choice (which failed miserably when Maks and Erin tried it ). I'm not sure, taken over the whole series, that she was the best of the best, but she is a lovely dancer and very likeable, so it's all good.

Interesting to hear CAI saying Len and Bruno didn't stick to the script on scoring/comments. I would love to know the extent of the manipulation that goes on. I suspect we'd be shocked, even though we know it's 'directed'
