Gibson have named Black Sabbath icon Tony Iommi as the greatest heavy metal guitarist of all time.

He heads a top ten which also features Metallica pair Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield plus late Ozzy Osbourne axeman Randy Rhoads.
And here's the Top 10

1. Tony Iommi
2. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield
3. Randy Rhoads
4. John Petrucci
5. Dimebag Darrell
6. Eddie Van Halen
7. Zakk Wylde
8. Adam Jones
9. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith
10. George Lynch
Will we ever see another Tony Iommi?

Swap Dave and Adrian with Kirk and James and the list would look a lot better.

Is this list based on just those using the Gibson firms guitars? As I'm surprised Ritchie Blackmore isn't on the list, nor Michael Schenker and quite a few others like the twin lead guitars of KK Downing and Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest.

You could argue that Ritchie Blackmore and Michael Schenker are (hard) rock guitarists, rather than 'metal'. I agree that Downing and Tipton would have been obvious choices for this kind of list.

As for what is there, they're all good/great guitarists but the top 10 is really predictable. Adam Jones is a surprise though - I think he's great, but he does look a bit out of place amongst the others and he wouldn't be in my top 10.

I hate it when they have a tie for the guitarists in the same band at a certain position. Then it just looks like they're naming whoever the guitarist is in their favourite band. Iommi looks like he's there because he's in Sabbath rather than being better than EVH etc.

Doesn't excuse missing Marty Freidman off. He's way better than Hammett.

Well, Iommi basically invented the heavy riff. The other guys on that list are all influenced by him. And arguably, as songs like "Bible Black" show, he's still writing those chunky, doomy riffs as good - if not better - than anyone else.

But then I wouldn't consider Tool as "metal" either...

As a purely 'metal' guitarist and the most influential ,then no-one can deny Iommi's place at the top of that list. But the rest of the list I find strange. I get the idea of Schenker (my personal favourite) and Blackmore, Tipton/Downing, even Gorham/Roberston not being there, as I suppose hey are not essentially metal in the true sense of the word..but neither are Tool, Van Halen, Ozzy's bands etc George Lynch is also more of a heavy rock guitarist...or am I getting definitions wrong here?
