Posted this elsewhere but this pretty much sums up the prolem with this storyline. There is a disconnect here between the story they think they've told us and what's actually transpired and honestly I'm not sure they realise this
.Laurel and Marlon began an emotional affair last summer/October. Ashley was entirely blameless in this. Marlon actively persued the wife of a neighbour and friend. Marlon justified his actions be painting Ashley as some sort of villain but viewers who had watched him for 15 years did not agree. Marlon and Laurel booked a hotel room to meet up, they planned to run away together. This is the story we all watched.Nothing that happens subsequently changes the fact that Laurel chose Marlon last year and chose to walk out on her marriage. She only decided not to go through with it because she might lose Gabby, not becuase she wanted to stay in her marriage to Ashley as she made it clear she did not. She went through a farce of a second wedding, making it obvious her heart was not really in it and she was denying her true feelings for Marlon. Ashley is not and cannot be the to blame for what they did. Something happened which led to a pause button being hit on the relationship, most obviously because the audience reaction was not what they had hoped for. 1) Viewers did not like to see Ashley and Laurel being broken up after all they had been through together. 2) Viewers did not like to see Marlon and Laurel together. They felt they had little chemistry; they had known each other for years without ever having feelings for each other 3) Viewers blamed Laurel and Marlon For whatever reason TPTB seem incredibly invested in this pairing and decided to fix the perceived problems by making Ashley the villain, hence the elder abuse storyline and Rhona and Paddy 'stealing' Leo.I said at the begining that this was simply a plot device to make Ashley the villian and sadly I was proved right. The story they are now trying to tell us is that it was Ashley's behaviour led to Laurel walking out on her marriage; Ashley is at fault for the breakdown of the marriage even though emotionally Laurel left the marriage last year. We are now told we should ignore everything that happened last year. That we should now be happy for them, they are not having an affair because it was Ashley's behaviour that led to the marriage breakdown. However, this retcon won't work because the viewers haven't forgotten what actually happened. Laurel and Marlon kissing, meeting in secret, going to hotel rooms, planning to run away together, it had all already happened independently of anything Ashley had done.Marlon had already broken up a family and a marriage. Most importantly of all though,we are still left with a dreadful, dreadful pairing with zero chemistry who look awkward and ridiculous together and nothing can fix that. The writers are simply making a bad relationship worse by trying to tell us what we should think. The writing continues to show to selfish, self centred individials who prioritise their relationship over the needs of vulnerable children and fail to take any responsibilty for their own selfish actions. This is the story that's actually unfolding onscreen and I'm not sure if you were to ask SB, he would see this as viewers see it. This attempt to tell us what to think is silly and badly executed. Let's get real here, viewers do not see them as Emmerdale's Mr. Nice Guy and the innocent victim of some 'heartbreaking year at the hands of a cruel husband'. Neither Marlon or Laurel are victims, they are entirely to blame for their affair ![]() |

Wasn't really paying that much attention when the Maurel fiasco started, mainly because I detest Marlon, but who actually made the first move? And, more importantly, WHY?

i dont think laural showed that she liked marlon like that until one of the mums from the down syndrom group that marlon used to attend said to her marlon was a catch and anyone would be lucky to have him. (or something along those lines)

That was a TERRIBLE scene...Laurel looking nostalgically at a gingerbread biscuit while the sounds of children were creepily playing in the distant background. *shudders*

Do you think so? David looks to me like he'd rather be a million miles away in their snoggage scenes.
![]() He has chemistry with Alicia though

I agree there should be chemistry between David and Alicia and it's what we all want to happen, but I'm a bit worried that dimmy David apparently isn't aware of the chemistry yet. I know love can grow out of friendship, (hence Maurel

IMO love can develop but more than likely it's a comfort type of thing like I could possibly have bought it after her baby/not baby died he'd comforted her a lot and that led into an affair. More an emotional one than a take me now kinda thing tho

Disagree you can develop different kinds of romantic love for a friend it doesnt mean they want to jump into bed together all the time
But with any relationship, the only way it can work is if both parties feel the same way about each other. If it's more on one side, it is generally doomed. |

In some cases, but we know that Alicia certainly does want to jump into bed with David, whilst David doesn't yet feel that way about Alicia, (although I'm sure that will change once she's back on the scene).
