The chief executive of Britain's second largest radio group has called on Ofcom to investigate the impact of Global Radio's takeover of Guardian Media Group's radio arm on the provision of news, music and sport content across the UK. Paul Keenan, the chief executive of Magic and Kiss FM owner Bauer Media, believes that Ofcom appears to have adopted a tendency to mostly concentrate on the impact of news plurality when looking at major media company mergers. Keenan, who was thwarted in an attempt to buy GMG Radio by his rival's £70m offer in June, is backing up his opposition to the deal with an independent report by Claire Enders of Enders Analysis. More. 2. Planet Rock owner Malcolm Bluemel is exploring a sale of the loss-making digital radio station. The millionaire entrepreneur and rock music fan who bought the station from GCap Media in 2008 is understood to have had approaches from four potential buyers. Bluemel has invested around £3m of his own money into the station, which is currently believed to be losing between £200,000 and £300,000 a year. More. 3. A radio station aimed at the over 50s launches on the DAB network this week with a line-up including BBC Breakfast’s ‘Green Goddess’ Diana Moran. The Wireless, backed by charity Age UK, aims to fill the gap left by SAGA radio and Melody FM which became Smooth Radio and Magic respectively, and will offer listeners practical tips on improving their health and lifestyle, as well as featuring light entertainment and classic hits from the Fifties to the Eighties. More. 4. As part of the plan to upgrade DAB system, the operator of four regional radio multiplexes plans to close them next year, to release the frequencies for conventional radio coverage areas Full Details. 5. UKRD owned stations Star Radio and Stray FM have had alterations to their licences to allow them to extend their coverage areas into Yorkshire. In an Ofcom first – parent company UKRD, which bought the Yorkshire Dales licence in January, has been allowed to surrender the licence it bought, and effectively re-apply parts of it to two existing stations. Stray FM, which was originally re-broadcast on the Yorkshire Dales frequencies after it bought and closed Fresh Radio, will broadcast with a single licence on FM in Skipton, Ilkley and Otley areas as well as Harrogate.Meanwhile, Star Radio, which is made up of the former Alpha, Durham FM and Minster Northallerton licences will effectively extend its Darlington licence to serve Richmond in the north of the original Fresh Radio coverage area. More. 6. Ofcom has awarded two further community radio stations in Scotland, and rejected two more, including a station for Scottish Asians. APNA Radio wanted to serve the Asian / Indian Sub Continent population in Edinburgh & the surrounding areas, delivering entertainment, community information, local, national and international news in Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and English. But the regulator rejected this application along with East Lothian FM in Haddington. No reason is ever given for rejected applications. There were two winning applications 7. In a planned first for BBC Radio, all stations owned by the corporation around the UK and the world will broadcast the same output for a three minute show. Radio Reunited will take place on 14th November at 17:33 GMT ninety years since the first broadcast from the British Broadcasting Company in 1922 to a potential global audience of 120 million people across every inhabited continent. More. 8. The digital switch-over has quietly commenced at four BBC local radio stations in England, RadioToday.co.uk can reveal. BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC Radio Nottingham have all stopped broadcasting regular programmes on medium wave, instead directing listeners to FM or DAB. It’s part of a five week trial to make savings and to find out if listeners will miss or complain about the lack of AM services. The BBC told RadioToday.co.uk: “MW services mainly duplicate what is already available on FM and DAB, and most listeners will be able to hear their local stations on FM. The BBC is also committed to a full roll out of local radio stations across the DAB network. If local radio is not already available on DAB it will be in the future. Full Details 9. BBC Commissioning has released tender details of the new all-local radio evening programme, which is set to start on January 7th 2013. The speech-led show, to be broadcast on all 39 local radio stations in England, will air from 7pm till 10pm. Applications are invited from all independent production companies who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and expertise, the BBC says. All offers should reach them by 12 noon on August 23rd 2012, with decisions made by September 14th More. 10. Radioplayer is to open up its service to non-Ofcom licensed stations, but initially only 30 slots are being offered. Any stations interested in joining – for a fee – can fill out an application for review. The online player currently features over 300 Ofcom licensed live stations, 15,000 on-demand items, and attracts 7 million regular listeners. Customers will be able to keep up to date with their favourite Sky shows and also get programmes from ITV Player and Demand 5. With BBC iPlayer coming this autumn and 4oD arriving in early 2013, the Catch Up service will keep getting better, with programmes from the most popular free-to-air and pay channels all seamlessly integrated into the Sky+ experience. Sky’s On Demand service also includes access to box sets such as Mad Men, An Idiot Abroad and Mad Dogs available at no extra charge to Sky customers. Full Details. 2. Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, today launched the DTG's Future of Innovation in Television Technology Taskforce. Speaking at the launch Ed Vaizey MP said: "The principal strength of the UK global television business is the domestic market and consumers' high expectations; a legacy of a robust public service broadcasting ethos combined with a competitive pay-tv market and an insatiable appetite for consumer electronics. Together these provide a valuable test bed for new technologies and ways of consuming media—and act as a catalyst for innovation. The UK has a long list of world firsts in television areas as diverse as information services like teletext, interactive TV like the red button, and on-demand services like BBC iPlayer." More. 3. Gary Barlow and Benedict Cumberbatch are to feature in YouView's £10m launch advertising campaign this weekend, as the long-delayed video-on-demand service attempts to convince consumers that it represents the future of TV. YouView – a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva and TalkTalk – aims to replace Freeview as a subscription-free interactive TV service to rival pay-TV giants BSkyB and Virgin Media. The launch campaign will focus heavily on TV advertising. Spots have been bought during ITV1's The X Factor on Saturday with ads running simultaneously on Channel 4 and Channel 5, supported by a national newspaper and poster campaign. More. 4. From April to June 2012, Ofcom received the most pay-TV service complaints about BT Vision, with 0.25 complaints per 1,000 customers, down from 0.27 the previous quarter. Complaints were mainly driven by issues relating to sales processes and problems with billing. More. 5. The overwhelming majority of UK companies are very positive about improvements that have been made to UK digital networks in recent years and are confident that the trend will continue. According to the CBI/KPMG infrastructure survey 2012, better connected, better business, 82 per cent of companies feel that networks are in a better state than five years ago and a similar proportion (79 per cent) are confident that this trend will continue over the next five years. Over 80 per cent of businesses surveyed said the quality and reliability of digital connectivity has a significant impact on their investment decisions. Comparing the UK’s digital infrastructure against that of other countries, 40 per cent of respondents feel that the UK networks outshine those in other parts of the world while just 27 per cent think they are behind the curve internationally. And over half of companies (54 per cent) with operations in over 50 countries feel that the UK’s digital infrastructure is ahead of international benchmarks. More. 6. ITV could have its licence renewed for another decade without any major changes to terms of the licence. The commercial free-to-air broadcaster made its submission to Ofcom during a licence consultation process earlier this year as both Channel 3 and Channel 5 licences are up for renewal in 2014. Northern Irish broadcaster UTV and Scottish broadcaster STV also own Channel 3 licences for their respective areas. ITV owns 11 Channel 3 regional licences for England, Wales and the Channel Islands. New culture secretary Maria Miller is being urged to renew the licences without any significant changes to production quotas, terms and conditions from 2014-2024, according to a report in The Guardian. 7. The surprising near-term viability of higher than HD resolution broadcasting dominated the tech talk at trade event IBC. Broadcasters are set to begin tests with the first full 4K services expected within three years. “With IFA followed by IBC there has been a mental shift in the attitude of broadcasters who suddenly see a strong future for 4K into the home,” said Olivier Bovis, Sony’s Head of AV Media. “Several [broadcasters] say they plan to experiment and test 4K in sports and other events. Before IBC I would have said that 4K broadcasts were still many years away. Now, with the considerable interest we’ve seen, I would say full 4K services will be arriving in 2-3 years.”Ultra-HD (U-HD) the high-resolution format shortly to be ratified as an international standard, can be either four (4K) or sixteen (8K) times the pixel count of HD 1080p. More.
8. UKTV is to launch bespoke VOD services for its three free-to-air channels. The curated services for Dave, Yesterday and Really will provide a mix of popular catch-up and archive material that will be able to be viewed through the channel websites. Already UKTV, owned by BBC Worldwide and Scripps Networks, has signed on demand agreements with TalkTalk, BT Vision and Sky Anytime. Darren Childs, CEO UKTV, commented: “UKTV is investing more money in content than ever before and it is important we are servicing our viewers by enabling them to access Dave, Yesterday and Really directly for the very first time, through our On Demand Players – three vibrant and curated, direct to viewer, player services. 3D Section Acclaimed movie director James Cameron admitted he was amazed by the quality of 3D-TV displayed at IBC last week. Speaking at a demo on the Dolby booth of the Dolby/Philips 3D joint-venture (which uses Dutch company Dimenco’s technology), he said “There is room for improvement but this already good enough for the consumer market, you guys are the first to blow out the door”. More. * * * * * Discovery and Sky have restated their intent to stay with 3DTV while the content proposition remains on movies, specials and live events. It’s been two years since the world’s first 3DTV channels launched in a blaze of publicity, but the industry has not managed to translate its enthusiasm for the format to consumers in high enough numbers, prompting many advocates to reign in their expectations. Take the Sky 3D channel, which launched in the UK in October 2010, and has accrued 250,000 Sky subscribers. BSkyB prides itself on pioneering new technology, it has invested heavily in production equipment (primarily OB facilities for live 3D sports) and has always described its 3D activity as core to attracting consumers to the brand rather than a profit centre in its own right More. * * * * * Researchers in South Korea have developed new technology that could enable 3D television and cinema to be viewed without glasses. The team, from Seoul National University, created a slatted barrier that is placed on the screen itself and creates the illusion of depth in the viewer’s perception. Previous attempts at making glasses-free 3D TV have made use of a similar technology, but they required the screen to be viewed from a certain angle. Astra 2F successfully launched at 10.18 this evening and now separated from the launch vehicle. The commentary with the launch suggested that control of the satellite would pass to SES in Betzdorf in around 2 weeks.

Incidentally, 4810 is showing the same as 1383 and 4811 is showing a copy of 1384 but in HD. It is being used for the Ryder Cup interactive service where two of the options are available in HD. Sound is only in standard form, not Dolby 5.1 on these channels. |

Hi! All
Any updates on QVCHD yet?, apart from the excitement of going through Switchover[stage 2] where we live[North East] and the retuning of equipment the other excitement of the launch of both Heart and Capital TV as well as QVCHD all due in September did not come about. It is QVC's 19th? birthday on Monday so maybe QVCHD on Monday?, otherwise I wonder when it will launch. I would have thought they would have maybe a Hightech Toys and Electronics show or a Hidefinition Experience show scheduled to coinside with the launch of QVCHD as it would make sense to show us the latest television so everyone can see what the picture looks like in HD. I know Heart and Capital are now scheduled for around 11th October so as I said what about QVCHD?. I look forward to replies. |

I guess with so much competition in the shopping channel genre having QVC as the first being HD gives them that edge over the others, especially when it comes to seeing the products on offer! |

I guess we'll expect at least 10-14 days testing prior to QVC HD going live? It has gone rather quiet on that front, I guess they'll want to be on-air sooner rather than later with the Christmas rush not far up on us!

With most, if not all, of the most popular genres covered for HD channels - Entertainment, Sports, Movies, and others - it makes sense for HD channels to launch for slightly more niche genres. Although celebrity news and shopping aren't my cup of tea, they appeal to others, so the forthcoming arrival of E! HD and QVC HD should be welcomed.

Sky On Demand - Coming October 11 for Ireland
On Demand is a new service coming to Ireland on October 11. On Demand will give our customers: Showcase: A selection of the week’s best TV. Customers will not need their box to be connected to their broadband router to access this content. It is currently available as ‘Anytime’. Unconnected customers will continue to receive the pick of the week’s TV but it will be named ‘On Demand’ rather than ‘Anytime’. For customers who have their box connected to their broadband router, and have activated On Demand, this section is called Showcase. TV Library: Box sets of current and classic shows and more. TV Library will offer customers a huge library of amazing TV on demand ready to watch when they are. This includes box sets of the latest series and all-time favourites, kid’s shows, sports, documentaries and much more. Movies: Hundreds of movies on demand for Movies Pack customers. Customers with the Movies Pack will be able to access over 500 movies on demand. Sky Store: Over 1000 movies to rent including latest DVD releases. All connected On Demand customers will be able to access over 1000 movies to rent at the touch of a button. This includes some of the latest DVD releases in SD and HD as well as hundreds of all time classic Library titles. Five Sky Store titles will be available each week to unconnected users too. |

Catch up TV on Sky + HD
I have a question about the service in Ireland. Why do you not have to have a broadband connection over in Ireland to access catch up TV. So why do you have to have broadband here to access catch up TV. Eventually will everyone get it free or is it only going to be available in Ireland only...
By the way i understand you need to connect your broadband router to access the showcase section of Anytime + Catch up should be free. I am sure the normal anytime service can download shows from ITV, C4, BBC and CH5. |

I am sure the normal anytime service can download shows from ITV, C4, BBC and CH5. On Demand in the UK and On Demand in Ireland will work exactly the same, the only difference may be some of the content. Catch Up cannot work as the standard anytime does, as there are hundreds of shows on catch up, and standard anytime can only download and hold a handful of shows at any one time. |

I'm assuming that, like the new EPG
that some of us even with anytime+ won't be getting Catch up TV anytime soon unless we go out and buy the new 1 or 2TB boxes? Any one care to comment or do you have the answer? |

As far as sky seem to have said, all sky+HD boxes (except Thompson boxes) will be getting the new EPG and catch up by the end of the year. It is now being tested on other boxes, see this thread:

...and 'Comedy Central Extra +1' (159) is now a full channel and doesnt timeshare (no longer starts at 7pm). Also... 'Nick Replay' (605) has been renamed 'Nickelodeon +1' on the EPG. |
