1. The chief executive of Britain's second largest radio group has called on Ofcom to investigate the impact of Global Radio's takeover of Guardian Media Group's radio arm on the provision of news, music and sport content across the UK. Paul Keenan, the chief executive of Magic and Kiss FM owner Bauer Media, believes that Ofcom appears to have adopted a tendency to mostly concentrate on the impact of news plurality when looking at major media company mergers. Keenan, who was thwarted in an attempt to buy GMG Radio by his rival's £70m offer in June, is backing up his opposition to the deal with an independent report by Claire Enders of Enders Analysis. More.
2. Planet Rock owner Malcolm Bluemel is exploring a sale of the loss-making digital radio station. The millionaire entrepreneur and rock music fan who bought the station from GCap Media in 2008 is understood to have had approaches from four potential buyers. Bluemel has invested around £3m of his own money into the station, which is currently believed to be losing between £200,000 and £300,000 a year. More.
3. A radio station aimed at the over 50s launches on the DAB network this week with a line-up including BBC Breakfast’s ‘Green Goddess’ Diana Moran. The Wireless, backed by charity Age UK, aims to fill the gap left by SAGA radio and Melody FM which became Smooth Radio and Magic respectively, and will offer listeners practical tips on improving their health and lifestyle, as well as featuring light entertainment and classic hits from the Fifties to the Eighties. More.
4. As part of the plan to upgrade DAB system, the operator of four regional radio multiplexes plans to close them next year, to release the frequencies for conventional radio coverage areas Full Details.
5. UKRD owned stations Star Radio and Stray FM have had alterations to their licences to allow them to extend their coverage areas into Yorkshire. In an Ofcom first – parent company UKRD, which bought the Yorkshire Dales licence in January, has been allowed to surrender the licence it bought, and effectively re-apply parts of it to two existing stations. Stray FM, which was originally re-broadcast on the Yorkshire Dales frequencies after it bought and closed Fresh Radio, will broadcast with a single licence on FM in Skipton, Ilkley and Otley areas as well as Harrogate.Meanwhile, Star Radio, which is made up of the former Alpha, Durham FM and Minster Northallerton licences will effectively extend its Darlington licence to serve Richmond in the north of the original Fresh Radio coverage area. More.
6. Ofcom has awarded two further community radio stations in Scotland, and rejected two more, including a station for Scottish Asians. APNA Radio wanted to serve the Asian / Indian Sub Continent population in Edinburgh & the surrounding areas, delivering entertainment, community information, local, national and international news in Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and English. But the regulator rejected this application along with East Lothian FM in Haddington. No reason is ever given for rejected applications. There were two winning applications
7. In a planned first for BBC Radio, all stations owned by the corporation around the UK and the world will broadcast the same output for a three minute show. Radio Reunited will take place on 14th November at 17:33 GMT ninety years since the first broadcast from the British Broadcasting Company in 1922 to a potential global audience of 120 million people across every inhabited continent. More.
8. The digital switch-over has quietly commenced at four BBC local radio stations in England, RadioToday.co.uk can reveal. BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC Radio Nottingham have all stopped broadcasting regular programmes on medium wave, instead directing listeners to FM or DAB. It’s part of a five week trial to make savings and to find out if listeners will miss or complain about the lack of AM services. The BBC told RadioToday.co.uk: “MW services mainly duplicate what is already available on FM and DAB, and most listeners will be able to hear their local stations on FM. The BBC is also committed to a full roll out of local radio stations across the DAB network. If local radio is not already available on DAB it will be in the future. Full Details
9. BBC Commissioning has released tender details of the new all-local radio evening programme, which is set to start on January 7th 2013. The speech-led show, to be broadcast on all 39 local radio stations in England, will air from 7pm till 10pm. Applications are invited from all independent production companies who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and expertise, the BBC says. All offers should reach them by 12 noon on August 23rd 2012, with decisions made by September 14th More.
10. Radioplayer is to open up its service to non-Ofcom licensed stations, but initially only 30 slots are being offered. Any stations interested in joining – for a fee – can fill out an application for review. The online player currently features over 300 Ofcom licensed live stations, 15,000 on-demand items, and attracts 7 million regular listeners. More

1. Sky+, Britain’s most popular personal video recorder, is getting even bigger and better with the launch this week of a brand new Catch Up TV service, more personal storage and new ways for customers to interact with their favourite TV shows. From today, Sky+ is giving customers even more flexibility by adding a new 7-day Catch Up TV section to its On Demand* service. Customers will be able to keep up to date with their favourite Sky shows and also get programmes from ITV Player and Demand 5. With BBC iPlayer coming this autumn and 4oD arriving in early 2013, the Catch Up service will keep getting better, with programmes from the most popular free-to-air and pay channels all seamlessly integrated into the Sky+ experience. Sky’s On Demand service also includes access to box sets such as Mad Men, An Idiot Abroad and Mad Dogs available at no extra charge to Sky customers. Full Details.
2. Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, today launched the DTG's Future of Innovation in Television Technology Taskforce. Speaking at the launch Ed Vaizey MP said: "The principal strength of the UK global television business is the domestic market and consumers' high expectations; a legacy of a robust public service broadcasting ethos combined with a competitive pay-tv market and an insatiable appetite for consumer electronics. Together these provide a valuable test bed for new technologies and ways of consuming media—and act as a catalyst for innovation. The UK has a long list of world firsts in television areas as diverse as information services like teletext, interactive TV like the red button, and on-demand services like BBC iPlayer." More.
3. Gary Barlow and Benedict Cumberbatch are to feature in YouView's £10m launch advertising campaign this weekend, as the long-delayed video-on-demand service attempts to convince consumers that it represents the future of TV. YouView – a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva and TalkTalk – aims to replace Freeview as a subscription-free interactive TV service to rival pay-TV giants BSkyB and Virgin Media. The launch campaign will focus heavily on TV advertising. Spots have been bought during ITV1's The X Factor on Saturday with ads running simultaneously on Channel 4 and Channel 5, supported by a national newspaper and poster campaign. More.
4. From April to June 2012, Ofcom received the most pay-TV service complaints about BT Vision, with 0.25 complaints per 1,000 customers, down from 0.27 the previous quarter. Complaints were mainly driven by issues relating to sales processes and problems with billing. More.
5. The overwhelming majority of UK companies are very positive about improvements that have been made to UK digital networks in recent years and are confident that the trend will continue. According to the CBI/KPMG infrastructure survey 2012, better connected, better business, 82 per cent of companies feel that networks are in a better state than five years ago and a similar proportion (79 per cent) are confident that this trend will continue over the next five years. Over 80 per cent of businesses surveyed said the quality and reliability of digital connectivity has a significant impact on their investment decisions. Comparing the UK’s digital infrastructure against that of other countries, 40 per cent of respondents feel that the UK networks outshine those in other parts of the world while just 27 per cent think they are behind the curve internationally. And over half of companies (54 per cent) with operations in over 50 countries feel that the UK’s digital infrastructure is ahead of international benchmarks. More.
6. ITV could have its licence renewed for another decade without any major changes to terms of the licence. The commercial free-to-air broadcaster made its submission to Ofcom during a licence consultation process earlier this year as both Channel 3 and Channel 5 licences are up for renewal in 2014. Northern Irish broadcaster UTV and Scottish broadcaster STV also own Channel 3 licences for their respective areas. ITV owns 11 Channel 3 regional licences for England, Wales and the Channel Islands. New culture secretary Maria Miller is being urged to renew the licences without any significant changes to production quotas, terms and conditions from 2014-2024, according to a report in The Guardian.
