Have you heard the new version of Forever Autumn by Gary Barlow. I love it and I loved Justin Haywards's version. I'm definitely going to buy the new War of the Worlds CD

Yes, I heard it a couple of days ago. Very close to the original, I like it!

All I can think of is its Gary Barlow singing it (ugh!). I definitely prefer the original, its much better.

Its alright for Gary Barlow. It doesn't offend me

I prefer the original Justin Hayward one though, Justin Hayward has slightly more depth to his voice in my opinion. The new version seems a bit too overly polished vocally, but that could just be down to the production.

It seems weaker imo. I'm talking objectively, ignoring my Gary Barlow aversion.

The original version felt like there was some meaning to it. This is polished, but not good.

Yeah it lacks the heart for me, definitely more feeling in the Justin Hayward version

I loved The Moody Blues and I love Justin Hayward so I thought nothing would be as good as his version but I think Gary's version is really beautiful. Gary has a lovely voice

Nice version, and I say this as an old fart who hates youngster covering classic songs from my youth

I've just listened to both versions and I do agree that Justin Hayward has a different tone to his voice with perhaps more depth but I do love both versions. Gary has done a great job in bringing this beautiful song up to date

Sorry, it's not in the same class to me, Justin Hayward has just a beautiful tone and more depth to his voice. It's OK, just nowhere near the original.

It's awful - a completely unnecessary cover of a classic - I'll be giving Jeff Wayne's WotW's reboot a miss.
Oh, and Gary needs elocution lessons - it's "drawing" not "drawring"

Its a pleasant enough vocal - but thats about it ... and nowhere near in the same class as Justin Hayward's vocal of the song. Gary seems to be trying to sound too earnest - Justin made it sound easy.

However - about the album itself - I bought it when it first came out - and its one of those albums that apart from one or two songs on it (Forever Autumn and Thunderchild), and of course - Burton's gorgeous, melifluous narration - I found it to be one incredible bore! It is ridiculously lauded as being some sort of great musical achievement and it just isn't. I'm sure in a theatrical setting it may be different - but as a stand-alone album for me it was just OK at best. The ONLY reason for doing this is to put money into Jeff Wayne's account. I found him to be a bit of a one-hit-wonder - and the hit wasn't that great!

I prefer the original but I grew up with WotW. I used to sit with the LP cover looking at the pictures as it played.

Is Jeff Wayne now the musical George Lucas? Move on, leave it alone! The original album is a classic, why do it again?

I agree, why is this being rehashed? you will never better the original, it has been released on CD and that is enough, dont mess with perfection.

I dread to thin what'll happen with the Phil Lynott track

i'm actually genuinely impressed. i like gary and think he has a wonderful voice, but i didn't think that this would be as good as what it is. it stays very true to the original and is a very good vocal. i do miss that chillingly beautiful narration by burtin dispersed throughout the song as it is in justin's though. looking forward to hearing liam neeson's take on it too - i love him!

i agree about the production though. a tad too polished and not quite as raw...it would actually sound 10 times better live. gary barlow's one of those rare singers nowadays that do sound better live.

(and take that are currently on a break, but are due to work on another album again soon. they all do little projects of their own. this is no different)

money. that is literally the sole reason. and i agree, i wish they would get over this trend of remaking everything and try and do something original again.

Will the Gary Barlow track be released as a single? I want to purchase it.

I've always loved this particular song and think Gary sings it beautifully - very understated without tramping all over it.

It's touring again, isn't it, with a new cast, inc Liam Neeson instead of RB? hence they've decided to "reboot " the album. barlow's not in the stage show so I'm not quite sure why he's on the album - he says he loved the original though

Let's face it, War of The Worlds was always Jeff Wayne's cash cow, nothing he has done since (remember Spartacus?) has matched it.
