You wouldn't need to go to a phone shop to update android. There is no reason to however a few more details are required. What phone? What version of android are you running? Is there a newer version out for your phone?

Presuming your device is compatible and/or entitled to an update, there is no need to go anywhere as Android updates have always been received over the air so even a computer is not a requirement to update an Android device.

I meant if an update actually existed. Sometimes manufacturers do not release updates for devices despite them being compatible, hence the 'entitlement'.

Yeah sorry, I've got a Samsung Europa, A.K.A GT-I5500 , It's on Android 2.1 Eclair & I don't believe you can update it via the phone itself, also my mates got the same phone with Android 2.2 when he bought his one, so I know for sure that it can be updated.

On a side note, I bought it back in 2010

OP if your phone was factory unlocked i. e. you didn't get it from a network then 2.2 should be available. However if is locked to a carrier then it may not, then have a search.

You need to download Kies on your computer and try to update. Look at this thread:
