I hate it. Capital is such a spiteful station and i dont know how they pick and choose what they play but its disgusting.

Anything that has FLO RIDA or DAVID GUETTA stamped on it automatically gets played to death, regardless of quality. Whereas real music like Leona Lewis's new track dont even get a look in

define real music. is david guetta fake music? cos it sounds real to me. what makes Leona real music and not flo rida?

this thread is silly.

Capital is quite annoying. It hardly plays anything that isn't dance-pop. And usually when they do playlist a non dance-pop song, you're still lucky if they play it more than once a day.

They wouldn't even play Jar of Hearts last year.

I want the UK to have a radio system like the US, where region by region a song grows. I'm sure it would boost sales and it would be really cool too. The UK is big enough, having 2 stations with huge control can be dangerous, just for the sake of musical diversity (although R1 play a lot more than Capital). I want to hear Wynter Gordon, Janelle Monae, Frank Ocean and many other great acts. Not just Rih RIh :P

Agreed - All music is "Real" music - wether you like it or not is another matter

As for Capitol FM if they don't play what you want to hear listen to another station that does.

I have a Spotify subscription and compile playlists of new songs each week. Usually end up with 70 or so. I stick them and the previous two weeks' in a folder and listen to them most of the day. It's liberated me from the tyranny of popular music radio in this country.

Wynter Gordon got a lot of airplay a few years ago with her song with Flo Rida, that sampled Eiffel 65, called Sugar. But apart from that, not heard her much, although Dirty Talk managed to be big last year.

Frank Ocean will NEVER get played on Capital FM. Since a couple of years ago, Capital have stopped playing urban music, so they're not allowed to play someone like Frank Ocean or Janelle Monae (apart from We Are Young obviously) anymore.

Capital haven't even played Niggas in Paris, so if they can't play that, what chance does any Frank Ocean song have of getting played on there.

I use Spotify aswell, and it hasn't changed what Capital FM plays.

The OP is complaining about the fact that artists can't be successful in the UK if they don't get played on Capital FM. I'm sure he's well aware that he can listen to other radio stations.

Easy, don't listen to the charts. Far better music outside them anyway!

Capital, R1 & Heart are all terrible. But Kiss are pure tripe. Rihanna, Chris Brown, Flo Rida & other generic r&b are played to death but anything remotely decent (eg: Teedra Moses, Frank Ocean) doesn't get a look-in.

I remember when they'd play a mixture of great music- UK Garage for example(yes, I know it was a while back) but for a so-called 'urban' radio station, they play the same obvious stuff other stations play.

These days Capital and Radio 1 rule the airwaves so much that their support (or lack of) can make the difference between a flop or smash on the charts.

Surely Capital and Heart are under the Global umbrella - or have I misunderstood. There are loads of great singers who NEVER get played on Radio 1 or Capital in any shape or form.

That wasn't the point of the OP. The point was that radio's are the ones preventing other genres and different artists from achieving chart success because it spins the same songs from the same artists time and time again.

Radio1 are becoming just as bad as Capital who by the way are still playing Jessie J - Domino every hour. Drives me insane. I wish we had more radio stations to tune into as lots of great music isn't being played because it isn't a specific genre or sang by a popular artist.

To be fair to Capital, there is the audience for their programming of the same few tracks. I remember when the station tried to diversify in the past it lost listeners.

You're problem is that you got 2 big stations and a few smaller stations

If you would've had only small radio stations, 1 radio station's influence would never be as big as it is now

Hilariously ironic statement. Not everybody agrees with you.

I wouldn't call any of them R&B. Rihanna's pop with R&B influences. Not sure about Chris Brown and Flo Rida though. Maybe pop/dance pop but in the case of Chris Brown some R&B influences?

Capital are a commercial station, and will play whatever is popular to bring in the listeners and advertising money...however would it really hurt them to mix the playlist up a bit?

Rihanna for example is a massive star, and most of her songs are in the Dance/Pop/R&B style they favour, but instead of giving 'We Found Love' another airing, would it really harm them to put an old Rihanna track like 'Pon De Replay' 'SOS' or 'Please Don't Stop The Music' on?

I don't listen I capital radio but I do think emily sande would not be where she is if it wasn't for the incessant plugging on radio 2 some months ago.

I love music but NEVER listen to the radio. I don't mind some of the music even if it's not the main genre I listen to, but even if I loved it I don't think I'd listen to it..
I was on a long trip one day, so the radio was on in the car, and I heard the same song 4 times on one journey!

If I had my iPod plugged in with playlists and all my music, I wouldn't play the song I like the most that amount of times!

The like a lot of alternative music mainly consisting of punk but love some metal bands.
The problem for me apart from there not being any radio station for this type of music in this area is any music with an electric guitar is classed as "metal".
It's like all alternative types of music crash into one so it would be difficult for me to find what I want to listen to.

Slightly off topic now but it makes the above point valid; When I used to go shopping in Virgin, they had "nu-metal", "punk", "ska" etc etc and I could find what I wanted easily and usually had a better choice than other places.
But you go into HMV and all they have is a "metal" section. In there is my favourite band Nofx. If anyone has any idea who they are, you will know they are not metal.

Radio Newcastle plays the same 20 or something songs (Buble, ABBA, Jessie J, The Cars. Sugababes etc) endlessly, along with the biggest flop since Eldorado (3 years of investment, and no awards/recognition to show for it-even Fearne Cotton gets an award) at breakfast. They've never played Flo Rida.

And Capital's supposed to be bad.

I'm not sure how it's spiteful. The whole One Direction boycott was spiteful but they went back on that and their new single went straight onto the playlist. Aside from things like that, simply not choosing to play a song you like doesn't make them spiteful. It's up to them to choose their playlist to cater to their audience. Capital FM seems to be doing pretty well and, according to their website, currently has a playlist of around 40 tracks.

Sometimes there's nothing better for airplay than having a hit record. To use another recent X Factor example, I think Amelia Lily was outside the top 50 airplay chart going into her release week. But the song did well and she went up to 25 and is now in the top 10. Little Mix were doing better but again, a successful release was what really pushed them ahead on airplay and I think their new track (which is great) will probably get more support early on.

The X Factor performance ought to help. It could be 11m unique pairs of eyes watching. But just as radio airplay doesn't guarantee a hit, neither does performing on X Factor so we'll have to wait and see how it goes. You've also got YouTube/VEVO and Facebook/Twitter as new ways of reaching an audience.

Surely Domino by Jessie J has broken some all time airplay record. All thanks to capital. Anyone know?
