Say "Series 7 will be split into two parts" -- and we are all ok with it (kind of)

Say "Series 7 will only be 5 episodes long" followed by "Series 8, which is 8 episodes long in 2013"

And we would all be disgruntled -- but esentially it's the same thing....

The Moff is a clever man.....

No, because the production run is one series. The funding is for the commissioned series 7, not two shorter series. We could call it two different series if we wish, but the shooting and production details will all say they are from the same single series.

Series 7, goes from where season 6 part two did. September. We've been cheated out of 6 months!

Call it one series, call it two, we've still got 14 episodes over 2 years rather than one year, which is what I think the OP meant.

under the old system the entire 13 episode run would have been over and done with in june or july.the remaining episodes of season 7 will be shown probably when season 8 would have been shown.yes we have been cheated out of a full series.the cutbacks at the bbc are to blame.

If I'm honest I wish it was two seperate series because I'm not going to see it as one series, series 6 only felt like one series because of the series arc. Plus this series has a christmas special in the middle of it.

If I had my way I'd have spread these five episodes out a bit more and make it like the 2009 specials. It would have added effect with the whole Ponds not seeing The Doctor for a while because neither would we.

I'm sorry, but how have we been hoodwinked?
Not to forget US drama series have been doing this series split for years.
But our English Dr Who? Never...

Call it what it is.
5 episodes running weekly from September 2012.
Then an XMAS special.
Then a resumption of the series.

The XMAS special is sort of what may determine the break, to, you know, make it special, rather than just slotted in the middle.

It's the final release of the DVD, that will mark it as series 7 anyway.

Nothing new. Some of the Tom Baker series were split in two over a Christmas, with the second half announced as a new series.

All this chopping-and-changing does make it a challenge to work out which series is which though.

Really? I didn't know there was a precedent for this sort of thing happening. Come to think of it Tom's first series is a bit shorter than the rest I think.

At least it's no longer just 14 x 25 min episodes...

Or 1 x 90min special!

That's the answer - simple as that.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Not only do you spell Christmas incorrectly, but FFS, you emphasise your error in CAPITALS!
I HATE IT whenever anyone uses that lazy abbreviation making Christmas sound more like an itchy skin complaint!

Seriously, stop it ... stop it NOW!

Firstly, it's against forum rules to give users a hard time because of their grammar or spelling.
Secondly, Xmas is perfectly legitimate and has been around for a very long time.

I really hate it when Pagan festival names are hijacked to promote fairy tales made up by the established church(es)

It's still ridiculous either way. With the same format Series 1-5 had, we'd already have had Series 7 and be waiting for a Series 8 to be aired in spring 2013 - not "series 7 part 2".

At least with Series 6 it all aired in the same year. But we've only had 5 (6 if you include the upcoming Christmas special) throughout the entirety of 2012, and we'll be waiting for 8 episodes (and maybe a special episode or two for the 50th) next year. As opposed to 13 episodes this year and 13 episodes (including/excluding the 50th anniversary episodes) next year. That's 13-15 eps throughout 2012-2013 vs 26 eps throughout 2012-2013. Absolutely ridiculous.

That said, I'm sure there's a reason for it. Budget cuts wouldn't have to do with anything, since the budgets are for a single series on the whole - the filming/airing dates wouldn't be affected.

I think Moffat just wants the episodes to be further apart to "increase anticipation". I can't help but feel that's the reason. And it's ridiculous.

Considering there was almost a year gap between the end of S6 and the start of S7, like most series, and S7 airs in Spring 2013, I highly doubt it

There will be S8 in 2013 along with 50th anniversay special and S7... Moffats aim is to have more Doctor Who than ever before next year to celebrate 50 years.

How on Earth does he plan to film that many episodes within a year? Unless S8 is *also* split, in which I will be extremely annoyed, this splitting-the-series thing is so annoying. And that still doesn't account for the production of the special either.

I'm pretty sure Moffat also said there'd be more Who than usual in 2012...6 episodes.
