What happened to the actual Emmerdale Farm which was run by the Sugdens. Does it still stand or has something else been built in it's place?

There's a video in the 40th anniversary thread I made called, "Back To Emmerdale Farm" made in 2008 where four of the original cast go back to the farm where the show was filmed. I think it's still a farm and people live there. I never understood why the producers decided to axe it from the show and move Jack and co to Butlers Farm, I liked the old farm.

I remember it well, nearly all scenes took place in the kitchen, Annie's best parlour only being used for funerals and courting. In almost every episode someone was seen vigorously washing their hands at the kitchen sink after coming in from the fields and cowshed- I always thought this quite unhygienic!

I'm pretty sure the story they gave for leaving was because of subsidence.

I'm surprised it's never mentioned, so we have no idea who now runs it or lives there? Such a shame considering it was a big part of the show.

Annie Sugden says in 2009 that the farm was devastated by the plane crash.
I think there was gas or some fluid on the land so they had to move.

Also they had to stop filming there because the owner was no longer using it for farming and wanted to retire or something there. The barns are now converted into rooms.

The behind-the-scenes reason for no longer using the farm was that the real-life owners had retired from farming and didn't want the disruption of filming on their property any longer. The farm wasn't axed; the producers had no choice but to stop filming there. On screen, it was written that there was a subsidence problem and the Sugdens had to move out, in the first place to Hawthorn cottage.

It can be assumed that the building eventually subsided - though little reference was subsequently made to it in the show. However, in the early 2000s when Ray Mullen was developing property in the area, I'm pretty sure the main site was said to be the location of the original farmhouse.

IIRC, I'm sure it was the 3rd farmhouse that Ray Mullen bought to develop in to flats. Chris Tate bought the rest of the land.

As others have said, the original farmhouse was deserted because of subsidence, causing the Sugdens to relocate to Hawthorn Cottage (on the same land) and Annie to move into what's now known as Tenants Cottage.

Frank Tate made a hostile bid to buy Emmerdale Farm in 1996, wanting to turn it into an access road for a quarry. Jack refused but Annie made a brief return and, being short of cash because of medical bills she and Amos had incurred, dropped the bombshell that she intended to sell her share to the Tates. Eventually, Jack and Sarah were forced to leave. They bought another farm, on different land, which they renamed Emmerdale Farm. It was this third farmhouse that Ray Mullen eventually bought to redevelop.
