As expected for Emmerdale, i don't think annyone really expected it too go above 10million. Its the 3rd live soap episode in as many years the novelty of potential slip-ups is probably long gone

I thnk the only way Emmerdale would have had 10/11m for the episode is if it went out at 8pm.

Guessing it's because no-one cares less about rounders in this country, and most countries in the world. Rightly so

The Americans probably say the same about Football/soccer

Would be a silly thing to say the rest of the world doesn't care about it, but there ya go.

USA is a wonderful place, one of the few places that don't like the sport, but they believe the rest of the world is out of step with them.....

Grand Designs 100th Episode doing very well for Channel 4 - 3.54m

Especially as we can all see Bruce Forsyth presenting Strictly Come Dancing live every Saturday night.




It'll be interesting to see how much of the live-episode boost Emmerdale holds onto and for how long, bearing in mind that it would expect a boost at this time of the year, anyway.

That entire situation was just a colossal screw up.

Of course the biggest aspect of the screw up is that they've now had to reschedule The X Factor against The Voice on Tuesday night. That is disastrous scheduling for an episode that should be the start of momentum building heading into the live shows. The Voice has been remarkably consistent so far this year with the changes to the Battle Rounds seemingly helping a lot so the last thing The X Factor needed was to be going up against it again in a hastily rescheduled episode out of its regular timeslot. This is not going to be pretty. I don't imagine NBC are particularly happy about the situation either...


It isn't about the number of people watching but who those people are. In the grand scheme of things very few people actually watch UFC or even baseball at this point (although it was more popular when Fox originally signed the deal). What's valuable about them is that the audience they do attract is primarily young men who are pretty difficult to attract to prime time broadcast content and as such advertisers will pay higher rates for them. That's generally true the world over as well.

Really bad rating for Who do you think you are, John Barnes must be quite an unpopular bloke with wdytya viewers.

Emmerdale live episode rated in the middle of my two predictions of 9.5m and 8.5m so done okay, but its no Eastenders or Coronatiokn street.

Very good rating for Emmerdale Live, I expect that will be the highest rating it pulls in this year. It could have gone higher I'm sure had it aired at 8pm though, as it has pulled 9m + several times in the last 2/3 years at 8pm on January Thursdays. It doesn't appear to have boosted the rest of ITV's night, a disappointing follow on from Mr & Mrs, which really ought to have seen a boost. DCI Banks performed solidly at 9pm though. Earlier the football seemed to do pretty well considering the timeslot, the match probably benefited from the added promotion the postponement brought.

Elsewhere Who Do You Think You Are? pulled in a low number, perhaps dented by the improvement in Grand Designs' ratings. Although it wasn't all good for Channel 4 as an awful October rating for Hollyoaks again crops up.

Not that bad, was it? I predicted 8-9 million, although I was secretly hoping it would be higher. Definitely agree that had it been scheduled for 8pm, it would have got way more viewers.

Thanks for posting those. Xtra Factor seems a lot down on the nearly two million who tuned in the week before, but that was because of a shock result the week before.

Interesting that XF had 11.3m and a 40% share, whereas Strictly had around the same and a 46% share, gives the impression that the TV audience is less on Saturday.

So I think the pattern will be that XF will beat Strictly on the Sunday, and Strictly will trounce it on the Saturday, at the moment that is what I am seeing.

In terms of Emmerdale, I see a 10.2m peak inc +1, and that average is better than a number of episodes of XF aired this year! Good rating for 'The Fallout' on ITV2, 1.8m must be among their highest average audiences ever, which I would expect to be higher when the consolidated ratings come in.

A bit underwhelming for the football on the other hand.

Yeah, and it would have made sense as well, especially as it means they could have shown Corrie as well to give it a big lead-in (although I know they were keeping Corries in reserve to dent Strictly). I remember back in 1999 Emmerdale got a huge rating when they showed an hour long episode at 8pm on a Tuesday. I know I always bang on about soaps being scheduled away from their regular slots but in an instance like this it's worth it, and they could have shown an Emmerdale special at seven.

Indeed, given how they always wheel out the first Corrie it's perhaps a surprise they didn't show the first Emmerdale, which at least has the benefit of being in colour. Actually rather than a live episode, which feels like they just did it because that's what soaps do on birthdays now, more interesting would have been doing an episode in the style of the first episode which famously had virtually no dialogue.

Well Corrie and Eastenders were both struggling to get over 10m before their live shows and got 14m and 14.9m respectively. I'm not saying it's a bad figure for Emmerdale just it's fairly decent, nothing more, nothing less.

Are we sure BARB haven't been inflating C4 numbers again? That Grand Designs figure seems to have jumped a fair bit.

Grand Designs had their own 'birthday'. As dave01 commented, it looks like it benefited from the 1m slump for WDYTYA, picking up a bit over 1m itself.

Or BARB could have allocated some BBC1 viewers to C4 during the 9pm hour.

Got to agree - I think they could have been a bit more adventurous with it and put it out at 8pm - the hour before (7-8pm) could have been an hour long "birthday special" containing actors from the last 40 years live in the studio etc.. and poss. this hour long show including the first ever episode!

Both shows would have comfortably beaten The One Show & Watchdog.

Interesting that TOS was slightly up on last week. Maybe it captured some Corrie fans who are not Emm fans.

Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys on Christmas Day. We've speculated that would be the case for quite some time around here.

It would make most sense for eastenders to be at both 8 and 9, with Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys taking the half past slots? But I can't see how they'd fit in Call the Midwife as well, that will have to go on another day...
