Or they could put on a documentary about people farting. I'm sure that would beat Marr in the ratings as well.
Explosure?

I don't think ITV will move now. Corrie before 7 is too early and it probably wouldn't damage SCD much anyway.

Meaning CBS, NBC and ABC widen the gap above FOX...

Hotel GB barely trending at all tonight, who were the two celebrities they hired to get people talking about it on there?

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/m...046512.article
Going by the blatant-plug style of their Tweets, it's Sara Cox and Tim Lovejoy. So if the ratings plummet tonight, are they to blame?

BBC1 able to do this because there's no Premier League football that weekend so there will be no Match Of The Day2. ITV, you didn't think it through.
Was going to say BBC could stick with that for the weeks after if the earlier start doesn't damage Strictly too much but forgot about Match of the Day. Shame as I'd imagine Antiques Roadshow with a half hour headstart would do more damage to Downton than Andrew Marr.

I think Homeland will hurt Downton more than expected, I think there is a crossover and I think Homeland is more "must see" so they'll choose record DA instead. I know I will although I am finally enjoying it again, once you accept the brilliant the first season was a one off it becomes an hilarious farcical comedy.

Worth mentioning that the original pitch for Blue Bloods was for it to become a family drama set against the backdrop of the NYPD. Over the first season the cases were supposed to fade into the background with the drama of the family and their lives becoming more prominent but that plan never took shape because CBS got cold feet about it. That's why the show had that random change of show runners toward the end of the first season. It was all very odd. This is all a round about way to say that I'm not sure CBS is all that interested in developing anything particularly out of the box. Even Vegas doesn't massively break the CBS mould and has the potential to just become a straight forward period procedural.

It should also be noted that The Good Wife is essentially a soap albeit one with a case of the week underpinning it and its never done especially well commercially. CBS' general strategy seems to don't fix what isn't broken and its hard to disagree with that sentiment. Unlike every other network they aren't desperately searching for sustainable new drama or comedy so its hard to see what motivation they have to really be too adventurous. Especially when there more adventurous moves don't really pay off that well.

I don't know why CBS keeps playing around with multi-cams or putting out this message that they really want them. Its just incredibly odd that a network that's so reticent to change their drama template is seemingly so determined to change their massively successful comedy formula. They're the only network that has any sort of success with mutli-cam comedy and they should just go ahead and embrace that rather than repeatedly trying to play the single cam game. They don't need a change of direction with comedy.
Dallas itself was a pure accident for CBS. David Jacob's original idea was what became Knots Landing but none of the networks would touch it. So he wrote a 5 part miniseries based on Gary Ewing's family in texas... Dallas.

CBS has never been known to be daring like its rivals. Its current schedule is based on pretty much the same format drama plus a reboot of one its big 70s hits.

Yep, I think a fair few people just gave up when they saw no improvement in sight.

As no one's posted this yet:

BBC One a week on Sunday:

6.50pm SCD
7.30pm Countryfile
8.30pm Antiques Roadshow
9.30pm Marr.
So for the second weekend in a row BBC One are trying to get the jump on The X Factor by starting Strictly slightly earlier than expected. It should pay off though ITV can easily rectify this by moving everything half an hour earlier.

Isn't Dallas on TNT? Or did you mean something else?

They thought hiring two "celebrity social media cheerleaders" was a worthwhile exercise?

Words fail me.

Someone paid to big up your show on Twitter. Totally sad, isn't it? I bet Twitterers see right through it.

From what I can gather, a couple of z-listers are being paid to tweet about the show like it's the bee's knees.

Like that's going to make a jot of difference to anything. Stupidest idea I've ever heard.

Hotel GB is a huge flop for Channel4. Its been plugged to death over the last month as if its a huge event with many of C4s stars, it cant have been cheap to get all of these people involved, and yet it only begand with 1.4million viewers. Dreadful.

I notice that once again an Itv drama flopped. Its been a flop season for Itv when its come to new or 2nd season drama, lots of poor ratings for them. DI Banks probably will be the next one to rate badly next week.

it is vastly over estimating the importance of Twitter, and even having saying that, it takes something away from Twitter as a medium for speech, and a way to show appreciation of a TV show.

We do know from this thread, that Twitter trends mean little in terms of ratings, its like C4 has not realised that.

Now that you mention it, I'd say that The CW had the rating of the night (seeing as everything else was quite predictable). That 0.6 for 2 hours of a music festival is better than a few of their vastly more expensive scripted series had for most of last season.

ep 2--26/02/12: 2.05m (7.8%), +1: 0.314m
ep 3--04/03/12: 2.05m (7.8%), +1: 0.315m
ep 4--11/03/12: 2.01m (7.6%), +1: 0.271m
ep 5--18/03/12: 2.11m (8.3%), +1: 0.351m

ep 7--01/04/12: 1.93m (7.8%), +1:0.376m
ep 8--08/04/12: 1.82m (7.4%), +1:0.336m
ep 9--15/04/12: 2.15m (8.5%), +1: 0.421m
ep 10-22/04/12: 1.91m (7.6%) , +1:0.345m
ep 11-29/04/12: 2.02m (8.0%) , +1:0.323m
ep 12-06/05/12: 2.40m (9.9%), +1: 0.485m

Series average (overnights): 2.04m (8.1%), +1: 0.362m
Series average (consolidated): 2.80m, +1: 0.517m
Finale had 3.39m, +1: 0.622m consolidated

Extraordinarily consistent performer; very unusual to see an import (or indeed any show) improve in week 2.

All broadcasters are guilty of putting too much emphasis on social media at the moment, but C4 are taking it to new extremes.

If they were to put even half the amount of effort they put into ensuring they are being talked about, into ensuring their scheduling is as spot on as possible for example, their ratings might be very different.

Indeed. Very very good acquisition. I really didn't expect it to hold its audience, let alone grow, even though it's an excellent show.

A fair few on the RPG expect it to set a new high on Sunday too. Downton concerns me a bit but there was room for both Downton and Spooks last year and I doubt the crossover is that big.

It's ridiculous - just who are the (#obvious) hashtags on everything aimed at. Those into Twitter will use them anyway (and if it's anything other than an obvious hashtag they'll use the obvious one anyway, not something like #HomelandC4) - while for the rest of the audience it's just on screen junk. So many US shows now have them on screen as a DOG throughout, especially on cable.

And as you say Dancc the ratings show they don't make a blind bit of difference - indeed arguably encouraging second screen viewing is just encouraging viewers to be less engrossed in what they're watching and hence more likely to tune out in the future.

Yes, I think I've gone too low at 2.3m, particularly with Marr tanking. Shame it's not a Star Rating!

fair enough, had to laugh at the end of Cuckoo tonight, when one of the Tweets read out was a reference to Friends. So much for BBC 3s youthful demographic.

They should stick to just #thenameoftheshow, displaying different hashtags might give them a few more of the trending topics occasionally (don't know how successful they are, do they all trend during X Factor?) but they don't promote the show like their main hashtag will as they require you to be watching the show to know what they're a reference to, most viewers won't bother to look them up and find out.

I forgot about BBC Three. Using a short, rare and valuable 20 second window to read out a load of ass-licking tweets and generally pat themselves on the back, that could be used to relay more useful information like when stuff is actually on, is another big no no. It's like some of these channels don't want the ratings !

God, I sound like such a misery guts tonight. Time for bed me thinks, hopefully get out of the right side of the bed tomorrow.
