Hurrah....viewers are in love wih their television programmes again......

I just watched the sickening revelations on Panorama via iPlayer......quite chillingly there was a warning whether I was under the age of 16 years.....

That's true about Take Me Out but it's interesting that Strictly does have a very high 16-34 score and isn't just the "old people's show" as it's often painted.

And the youngs that do watch tend to be upmarket.

The result show on Sunday had a 29% share of ABC1 16-34s and only a 11.5% share of C2DE 16-34s

So which 16-34s would ITV ideally like to get or do they just want 16-34s in general? Also in that demo breakdown they show Strictly's overall 16-34 rating on Saturday as 6.9 but percentage of 16-34s in total is quite small. So has is the 16-34 rating calculated?

ITV won't really care - 16-34s is a buying audience, ABC1 16-34s isn't so they can't monetise it. C4 would be more interested as they push that they attract more desirable demos.

ABC1 16-34s will be watching less TV than the average so that helps the BBC reach more people in general and they care more about weekly reach.

A 16-34 rating of 6.9 means that 6.9% of all 16-34s watched the show - so not just those watching TV at the time but 6.9% of the total 16-34 population.

They left the family drama aspect behind a bit when they moved it to starting at 8:30pm!

Take Me Out's commercial value is about the same as a 6m-rated entertainment show with normal age skews, it's that valuable in terms of ad revenue. TV Burp was good at doing that - last Autumn it was getting about the same number. of 16-34s as TMO but an overall audience 1m bigger.

On another note Surprise Surprise started off quite well, even pulling in pretty good demos in 16-34s and HWWC. I think it'll hold up well over the series around the 4m mark as the first episode did what it says on the tin and a promising sign that around 19.20-19.30 its audience didn't tail off when SCD started. If it does hold up, I think they should look at bringing it back for Q2 Sundays and having two series a year.

There are two things going on in that chart.

The % breakdown is saying that 11% of the total audience of Saturday night Strictly is 16-34.

The rating is the % of all 16-34s they represent.

On Saturday night only roughly 30% of all 16-34s were watching TV at any one time so ratings rarely go above 15-20% for this audience

Take Me Out does well for advertisers but it highlights how for a show to be a big hit it needs to get decent numbers across all age ranges.That was another problem that they had with their dramas which got good ratings but skewed old, so they ditched them and tried to make dramas that appealed to younger people. They ended up with dramas that didn't appeal to anybody.

Surprise Surprise started very well. I think Holly as host made the show more popular with younger people. As you say I think it could run twice a year.
