The Downton ratings are mystifying.
I know not one person who has bothered to watch more than one episode. Then again, I don't make my own jam, go on winter cruises, or play whist.... |

Programme of interest?
Quote:
PERSON OF INTEREST (TUE 18 SEPTEMBER 2103) 1,514,000 CH5 Maybe the penny is finally dropping with this show. I appreciate that the main showing didn't improve all that much week-on-week, but the first rerun on 5USA rated very well compared to the programme that was on C5 at the time, also beating Dallas on C5+1. PERSON OF INTEREST (TUE 18 SEPTEMBER 2203) 272,000 CH5+1 PERSON OF INTEREST (TUE 18 SEPTEMBER 2103/2203) 1,786,000 CH5 TOTAL PADDY & SALLY'S EXCELLENT GYPSY... (WED 19 SEPTEMBER 2201) 780,000 CH5 PERSON OF INTEREST (WED 19 SEPTEMBER 2200) 274,000 5USA DALLAS (WED 19 SEPTEMBER 2203) 215,000 CH5+1 www.barb.co.uk C5 are trailing the episode this Tuesday (October 2) heavily, so interesting to see if the upward trend can continue. Tough slot though with ep 2 of The Paradise, Man United in action once again and Hotel GB all taking potential viewers away. |

Where does this idea that Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife were out of nowhere hits come from? Its a bit like describing Sherlock an out of nowhere hit for the BBC. Its not really true. Admittedly the scale of their success might be a little surprising but its not like either of these shows flew under the radar and came from nowhere. Both received sustained promotional campaigns from their broadcaster and both were given plum Sunday night slots and Downton was given an X Factor lead-in. I just don't understand where this idea that both or either show came from nowhere comes from. Downton in particular. Regardless of whether it was airing on ITV there was an obvious expectation surrounding Downton given the writer, cast and cost.
With Downton it was following The X Factor but some felt that Single Father with red hot David Tennant fresh off massive ratings for Doctor Who would do well. It certainly wasn't expected to be crushed. Some at the BBC weren't sure Sherlock was going to be a big hit either and felt it could have been another Jekyll for Steven Moffat. There are solid hits and then there are super hits and super hits don't come along very often and are not always the ones you suspect. So I disagree and can't be convinced otherwise so no point trying. Let's talk about something else instead.

You have a very warped idea of Downton's audience. I know loads of people that love it. It's pure escapism and that's why it works.

Just following up on old thread re Listed Events.
It's the law (Communications Act 2003) that if a new event is Listed then any existing contracts stand (ie are unaffected) - ie the new listing only takes effect after the existing contract has expired. Per Communications Act: "The allocation or transfer of an event to group A does not affect the validity of a contract entered into before the day on which the Secretary of State consulted the persons mentioned in subsection (2) in relation to the proposed allocation or transfer." Link: http://legislation.data.gov.uk/ukpga....htm?wrap=true So in order to list a new event before the expiry of an existing contract a new Act of Parliament would be needed (as well as obviously amending the List). |

Wow! Great ratings for Once and Revenge, shaky start for 666, I thought it'd actually match Revenge and post around a 2.8... still that's overall a great night for ABC.

Set to soar? We will see. Regarding CBBC's top 10: 1 THE SCOOBY DOO SHOW (MON 1601) 369 2 THE SCOOBY DOO SHOW (TUE 1601) 308 3 WOLFBLOOD (TUE 1718) 294 4 MI HIGH (TUE 1748) 281 5 SCHOOL FOR STARS (TUE 1632) 278 6 THE STORY OF TRACY BEAKER (TUE 1702) 264 7 THE STORY OF TRACY BEAKER (FRI 0726) 263 8 THE STORY OF TRACY BEAKER (WED 1701) 262 9 FILM: HOTEL FOR DOGS (2008) (SAT 0757) 257 10 SCHOOL FOR STARS (MON 1631) 257 The Scooby Doo Show is still beating everything, as well as Wolflbood only managing 294k. Maybe when Wizards vs Aliens begins to air, the ratings will be like Sarah Jane Adventures at this period 2 years ago (when they were around the 800-900k mark). |

Full US data - demo numbers and total viewers.
ABC 7PM: Once Upon A Time: The Magic is Coming – 1.8 [6.00 million] 8PM: Once Upon A Time – 3.8 [11.01 million] 9PM: Revenge – 3.2 [9.50 million] 10PM: 666 Park Avenue – 2.2 [6.97 million] Once down 3 tenths vs. last years debut and Revenge down a tenth vs. last years debut. ABC will take both of those numbers but by the same token both are likely to fall in the weeks to come. Revenge dropped three tenths across its run last night – 3.3 / 3.0 half hours - the same as Park Avenue – 2.3 / 2.0 half hours - which isn't a great sign. Park Avenue nearly an entire point below Pan Am's debut last season. I doubt it'll last anywhere near as long as Pan Am did. CBS 7PM: 60 Minutes – 1.8 [11.53 million] 8PM: The Amazing Race – 2.5 [9.70 million] 9PM: The Good Wife – 1.8 [9.81 million] 10PM: The Mentalist – 2.1 [10.83 million] The Good Wife down 4 tenths on last years season opener to what I think is a series low or at least tied for a series low. The Mentalist is down 2 tenths on CSI: Miami's premiere in the same slot last season and 7 tenths on its own season opener last year. Again I think this is a series low for a regularly scheduled episode. The Amazing Race is down half a point on last falls season premiere and posted its lowest opener ever. CBS continues to have major problems with Sunday night. Fox 7PM: NFL Overrun – 7.9 [20.82 million] 7:30PM: The OT – 7.7 [19.80 million] 8PM: The Simpsons – 3.8 [7.97 million] 8:30PM: Bob's Burgers – 2.5 [5.40 million] 9PM: Family Guy – 3.3 [6.53 million] 9:30PM: American Dad – 2.5 [5.23 million] The Simpsons is down just a tenth vs. last year whilst Bob's Burgers is down more than half a point on The Cleveland Show's performance in the same slot last year but up a tenth on cancelled Allen Gregory's season debut in the slot in late October. No 'Ted bump' for Family Guy which was down massively on last years 4.1 opener whilst American Dad is down half a point year-on-year. NBC 7PM: Football Night in America – 1.9 [5.78 million] 7:30PM: Football Night in America – 2.8 [7.80 million] 8PM: Football Night in America – 6.2 [16.75 million] 8:30PM: Sunday Night Football – 8.1 [20.56 million] NBC will no doubt see upward adjustments when finals come in later today but they of course won the night with Sunday Night Football. |

Revenge and OUAT premiered very well. Poor start for 666, same numbers that GCB got for its premiere, can't see it lasting.

Another mediocre rating for X Factor last night - when will this series gather momentum?

Liam Hamilton @LiamHamiltonDCD Stunning average for such a long broadcast which didn't end until 1.30am, two or so hours after the final putt.
10 hours plus of scintillating Ryder Cup coverage averages 1.3m on Sky Sports, peaking at over 2m as Kymer sinks put to cap Europes comeback |

Maybe if Rylan is kept over someone better than him in the bottom two, that could bring a huge peak. |

Sticking with US numbers for a moment some Live+3 numbers (that's live viewing plus 3 days of DVR playback).
Huge increases for both Revolution on NBC and Modern Family on ABC. Revolution's timeshift is bigger than some of NBC's Live+SD numbers. That its also equalling The Voice with timeshift viewing is incredibly impressive. The Fox Tuesday line-up looks a little healthier with 3 days of playback as does the CBS Monday line-up. Modern Family is just a monster. Bones – 3.0 [+0.7] The Mob Doctor – 1.6 [+0.3] New Girl (8PM) – 3.8 [+1.0] Ben & Kate – 2.4 [+0.3] New Girl (9PM) – 3.8 [+1.0] The Mindy Project – 2.9 [+0.5] The Voice (Monday) – 5.2 [+0.8] Revolution – 5.2 [+1.8] Go On – 3.2 [+0.5] The New Normal – 2.8 [+0.8] How I Met Your Mother – 4.4 [+0.8] 2 Broke Girls – 4.6 [+0.9] Modern Family – 7.3 [+1.8] The Neighbours – 3.6 [+0.4] |

Yeah, I wasn't in favour of it going there either. Second worst night it could have ended up after Friday.
2.1 is an awful result in the demo. Oh dear CBS ! Its striking how badly CBS have managed The Mentalist though. When it debuted in '08 it was the new hit show of the season and they've somehow managed to completely undo all of that with some truly bizarre scheduling choices. And I do think The Mentalist's decline is scheduling related rather than content because there hasn't (from what I've seen) been a noticeable decline in the quality of the show. |

BBC One should have had Hunted or something on.
Spooks did well last year. Marr is the worst thing they could have chosen. It'd be posing 2.5m with or without Downton. [very good ratings for ITV last night] X-Factors ratings are starting to look more healthy, if you dont compare with year on year. What we need to do, is look at how much each episode was down, year on year, and see how much that figure changed as the series continues. |
