it seems very apt that corrie, Emmerdale are fair for criticism but the saintly EE is off limits and I gave my take on the upcoming EE plots, Dan may not be accustomed to my replies that may seem sarky but that's how I am in real life so by default on here.

Anyone think Emmerdale's live episode will be as much of a ratings hit as EE and Corrie's live episodes in 2010?

Also, I mentioned a few hours ago about a soap opera aimed at kids, younger audiences (e.g Tracy Beaker Returns, Sarah Jane Adventures), what are your thoughts?

Please feel free to ignore me but that post where I said regarding excuses was solely aimed at EastEnders, I fail to see how you went full circle and viewed it as baiting.

As it does seem that where EE and its poor ratings every excuse is made to justify it, the show is in a bad way and the ratings reflect it,

I dont think its true that EE is considered above criticism, it just has a couple of posters who will stand up for it, and not let criticism go unchallenged. I dont believe there is anything that is not allowed to be criticised on this thread, expect maybe Downton Abbey.

The Chase is easily the best teatime quiz show in years - brilliantly compered and usually exciting. It is such a great format I am surprised that Celebrity Diving is sweeping the world and The Chase not. Though I think Bradley Walsh is 50% of the reason for the success of The Chase in the UK.

Christmas Special of that maybe?

Loved the way they promoted his appearance on Daybreak with a special ad in which he answered Chase style questions!

When has a tea time quiz been used to promote a flagging breakfast show before?

I suspect Bradley and The Chase is also one reason Law and Order: UK has been renewed. Though its figures have been OK by other drama standards these days also.

Wonder if they will now parachute him back into Corrie for a few months! He is proving a versatile asset to ITV and maybe he wil present This Morning next. if Phil is off.

On that score OPhilip Schofield mentioned Fern in Strictly for the first time today - though a tad like an afterthought, Towards the end of the show and Phil Vickery's cooking slot he asked 'how's your Missus doing on Strictly''. No name, no pack drill... Doubt Fern will be dancing on ice any time soon by the looks of it.

WB ep9 up to #6 on iPlayer, word is getting around, it seems.

The Voice up week on week with Revolution slightly down. DWTS back on top in terms of total viewers. CBS had a good night with 2 Broke Girls and HIMYM. Fox again had a dead night on their hands.

The last 15 minutes of The Voice might have been over 5.5. All ratings and info from TV by the Numbers.

Its ratings are pretty good aswell, 3.07m yesterday including +1, helped by the celebrity edition. Someone on the thread for 'The Chase' who was on it (got 12k in the cash builder, eventually won) mentioned something about a 'champions' special with all the most successful contestants. If that was to happen then I think it'd help if it was aired in primetime.

EastEnders LIVE and Corrie LIVE had a big buzz around it months before airing. The Emmerdale one doesn't seem to have and i think the 40th specials have been rushed
and it just seems like they are having one because the other two had 14/16million viewers.

I think Emmerdale will pull in around 9 million with a peak over 10million at around 7:50.

Sadly i will be at work so i wont be tuning into the LIVE episode as i have done with the other two soaps (and The Bill)

Soaps are not the ratings draw they once were, in fact there are way to many episodes and dare I say familiarity breeds contempt, a soap aimed at kids could and would have worked a decade or two ago but if your looking to the BBC then for the ratings they could expect to get would not justify the cost.

A kiddy soap on say CBBC would require heavy investment of at least 6 million then a similar sum as the years progress, that's a lot of the budgets for kiddies programming for CBBC.

The BBC is investing in shows such as Woolfblood, Wizards and Aliens and that's the route they should take, Byker Grove was their last foray and productions like that are a product of their time.

ITV should take a punt on this and move it from 5pm to a weekly primetime slot - either 8pm Wed, or Saturday pre XF, or Sunday evening. Personally I would favour the Wed. slot - or how about "flop" Tuesday?

It's got everything going for it - a good presenter who is funny and encourages the contestants. The format is highly entertaining!

They are already bringing back Tipping Point to 5pm weekdays, and am sure they could find other "quiz/game" shows to fill that slot - what about Golden Balls returning?

Tracy Beaker Returns worked out well for them, with 700-800k viewers. I was thinking of something along the lines of Waterloo Road, Byker Grove but as a soap, and aimed at a slightly younger audience (but still appealing to wider audiences as with a few of CBBC's big hitters, TBR, SJA etc).

That said I would like to see the special editions (if there are going to be any other than celebrity specials) in a primetime slot before XF.

If this champions special was to go ahead, it wouldn't surprise me if the Chaser was to offer the contestant over 100k, as they had done very well in their first appearance.

In the Utopia world that is a DS forum, I agree - have the specials on a Saturday evening, and move the original show from 5pm to midweek.

Merlin is an interesting one. It certainly doesn't skew as young as you feel it ought too - but perhaps that's just an inevitable consequence of the slot it competes in and the lead-in it receives. It does, at least, play to a very healthy 600k under 16's audience. So it's 'sub 34' skew would look a lot healthier than it's '16-34' one. (Incidentally, that size of children's audience gathered round a big Saturday night offering is another good argument for not being too concerned about removing the CBBC weekday block. Quite clearly, if BBC One wants to engage younger viewers, other slots offer much better opportunities than the outdated post-school block.)

Waterloo Road is proportionately massive with younger viewers. An X-Factor style sub-34's skew. That sort of audience is pretty elusive for BBC One through the week - especially with drama - which probably explains the channel's loyalty to that show. Must be the only thing keeping it going, though, with overall ratings like it's been suffering during this run.


Another great Monday for NBC. The decision to hurry The Voice to the fall may have smacked of short termism, but you can't argue with the results. It's completely transformed the network's competitive stance, leaving traditional powerhouses like DWTS and the CBS comedy block in the dust. I'm sure everyone would like to see Revolution just tick up slightly one of these weeks and stop the erosion - but even if it's very soon playing in the mid-2's, it's still huge by NBC's standards. I wonder what their plan is regarding mid-season, though. Will they dare play it without a Voice lead-in? Or go on an extended midseason break until it returns. Probably more sensible to do the latter - expecially with a serialised show where airing originals in nice solid blocks is very important.

CBS is looking rather lacklustre still (even with an artificial boost) and I don't think 2 Broke Girls is going to prove the standout star they felt they had this time last year.

And as for the other two networks, well… Castle topping it's DWTS lead-in surely has to trigger a re-evaluation from ABC. It's something they couldn't have contemplated a few years ago. I don't know if they've enough original content to hold off on a spring run of DWTS, but this must be the last year it runs two cycles. They have to drag themselves away from it and find something new to fill some hours. There is an opportunity for drama on Monday, but on the whole I think ABC are going to be needing more big non-scripted too. Their Friday fare is great for that day, but they'll need something new to cover off parts of the rest of the schedule in the absence of Dancing.

The Wikipedia article says it started well, growing to 2m or so (beating Richard and Judy), but near the end of its run it was as low as 1.2m. That wasn't good enough even then (before the success of the The Chase - and to a lesser extent Tipping Point - showed what could be achieved in that slot) so it seems dead and buried, unfortunately, although repeats continue on Challenge, and late night on ITV1.

I quite liked Golden balls but I wonder if the problem with it was the rather nasty way contestants could steal from each other at the end. It could leave a rather sour taste.

Thanks for that guys - I guess I had forgotten how nasty that show could be at times, and yes - the way the ratings went it's unlikely to return. I would still move The Chase off that slot, air Tipping Point and any other quiz/game shows they could run out...

Decent enough for POG.....at least we now know more viewers prefer to watch dogs than see him in his own show.

Mamma Mia! tonight could be good for 4m inc +1......it did well on its premiere showing.....
