Hard to say whether the BBC half past the hour scheduling worked in their favour last night. Early in the evening Coronation Street was clearly dented by a 6:50pm Strictly head-start and I expect Strictly rated higher than it would have done had Corrie started first, so in that sense it was a success. However Antiques Roadshow does seem to have been badly dented and Andrew Marr seeing a boost of 200k at those very low levels doesn't really have any relevance. Downton Abbey rated slightly higher than last week, which I didn't expect given Antiques Roadshow scheduling, and X-Factor was stable (I expected a boost due to last week's controversy).

The CW's Beauty and the Beast is going to UKTV's Watch channel:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/new...the-beast.html

Grimm did very well there, so this too should do pretty good business for them.

And given the reviews for episode 1, it's maybe not such a bad thing if C5 missed out (if they were even in the running in the first place).

BSkyB will wait until the quality goes down before picking it up, that's normally how it goes!

I refuse to believe that an entire Twentieth Century Fox series is going to air exclusively on FTA television for its full duration. But I'll enjoy it whilst it lasts until the inevitable happens.

Good news about Season 3.

I don't want to sound thick, but is this a reworking of the Linda Hamilton series from the eighties or something that sounds a bit like a reality show?

Eastenders' episode that was dented to 6.26m (27.3%) by the football on Friday drew a rating of 549k (3.6%) for the BBC3 repeat at 10:30pm. Whilst that is up on the 330k-430k ratings BBC3 has been drawing on Fridays of late, I do think Eastenders needs to be put back to the 10pm slot. It was only a few months ago you'd expect a 1million + figure on BBC3 for a night like that.

It's loosely based on the original series with a modern day twist. Not a reality show, you're probably thinking of Beauty and The Geek which also airs on the CW and here in the UK on E4.

As I thought, the original was quite a good show. Actually Beauty and the Geek isn't bad either as it gives anoraks some hope( ie me).

It's been very interesting to monitor what's happened to the repeat showing of the BBC soap since it moved just half an hour later. A dramatic decline certainly. And I can't help but wonder if other broadcasters have been watching closely too.

Before I thought C5 and maybe even C4 could benefit from restructuring the scheduling of their teatime soaps, but having seen what's happened to EastEnders on BBC Three I would probably caution against that now, as it's not a given that viewers will relocate to the new time. If anything it just breaks their viewing habit and they may well stop watching as a result.

11.7m peak for XF, that's up on last week's peak of 11.4m. Good for this years standards, now it seems to be picking up. So the average was 9.7m including +1? The DS article states it having a 35.3% share. I think the best chance at this rate XF will have to beat Strictly is on a Sunday. Could someone please post the share for the peak (including +1)?

MediaGuardian reports a 1.7m 15-min peak for C5's boxing on Saturday. They'll be pleased, especially as they will have got some tasty young male demos.

Itv threw in just about the strongest schedule there is(outside special events) last night so I guess the Beeb will be happy at the near 20% share it got. SCD scored a good victory over C/S and will presumably go later and improve in the coming weeks. Good peak for XF though it maybe the case that the publics interest will polarise more to the results and more still to the final 15 minutes. Countryfile strong against immense opposition, AR less so and Marr "stumbles on" according to the report.
Fascinating fact from last nights show-apparently 16 million people today are related to Genghis Khan (get that man a chair he must need a rest)-I think Marr would need find Khan to be still alive to make the figures rise to respectability.

Oh my goodness. I think I can see why C5 are so keen to get new episodes of Body of Proof on air given how well the reruns of Season 1 are doing on 5USA:

1 BODY OF PROOF (WED 2100) 421,000
6 BODY OF PROOF (WED 2200) 48,000

Already been shown on Alibi and C5. Awesome ratings!!!

Very very nice. Had it not been for the ratings stunt over on Xtra Factor that week, it would have been 2nd on multichannel behind the beast that is Celebrity Juice.

Looking at the m/c top 10 generally, that's a pretty diverse mix of shows being watched:

2 entertainment
2 sport
2 sitcom
2 reality
1 soap
1 drama

Notably (and Red Dwarf fans might get a kick out of this) no BBC shows made the top 10 this week. Don't Tell The Bride isn't rating as well as it was this time last year, which they might be disappointed about.

Thanks as ever Mike for these. Yay for Merlin - 7.12m on the officials for part one is a big success by any standards, and comfortably within the Top 20 for the week. As for the debate at the weekend - it is possible to like/root for BOTH DW and Merlin at the same time!

Given that two of the highest rated BBC dramas of the year are in the same family/fantasy genre, and that so many others of late (period, crime, public service, action, romantic) have done far less well, it does beg the question of why the BBC does not try a few more. Adult fantasy does less well (Outcasts, Survivors) but the family oriented stuff can succeed brilliantly (even Robin Hood, bar its absysmally scheduled and repetitive third season). When do the Musketeers appear?

Looking at 15 minute time periods for XF on Saturday:

2025-2030: 8.6m

2030-2045: 8.9m
2045-2100: 9.1m
2100-2115: 9.2m
2115-2130: 9.1m
2130-2145: 8.8m
2145-2200: 9.1m
2200-2215: 8.5m
2215-2230: 7.5m

2230-2235: 4.4m

The 5 minute breakdown really did show massive variation - some of the 5 minute segments (those with ads, presumably) would be 1.5m-2m lower than those around them.

That's good for Merlin, 7th highest rating programme of the week despite being up against X-Factor. The timeshift must have been decent.

Surprising to see SCD maintain its King of Saturday Nights lead over TXF even after consolidation. And even with the extra viewers on Sundays, 10.2m is still a pale shadow of former glories for show very definitely on the slide.

7.13m is a cracking consolidated figure for Merlin. How does that stand compared to 2011 - didn't think it broke 7m in the officials until well into the run?

Paradise held firm with a strong 5.79m, very acceptable for what it is and the slot it is in, whilst Hunted consolidated nicely to 5.69m.

And GBBO rose still further to 5.69m also - astonishing for a cookery gameshow on BBC2! And well ahead of Holby, granted that Scottish viewers aren't captured in the BARB figures.
RobbieSykes123
15-10-2012
btw, I put 7.13m for Merlin because the BARB Top 10s page gives it 7,125,000 - which is 7.13m in my book. Either BARB made an error, or the 7,125,000 is itself a rounding of say 7,124,999 or less which means it gets 7.12m on the formal chart page?

I'll say it was! It went from 5.49m in the overnights to 7.12m in the finals adding 1.63m! Last year Merlin had an overnight of 5.2m that went up to 6.40m.
