Why does Gail McIntyre act so stupid and weird nowadays?

This could go for the same with Deirdre. Gail is just a bizarre character. Especially when it comes to scenes in the Bistro, she always has a strange grin on her face and acts weird, especially when she gets given a waitress job by Nick.

Why have the producers turned her into this sort of character. And Deirdre acts odd at times as well, like recently with that really unfunny scene with her getting drunk at the dinner table with Ryan and Tracy. Such an embarrassment.

I don't mind Deirdre acting a bit doddery and stupid as it seems to suit her character a bit but not Gail. As mentioned in the SOR thread, Gail's voice and facial expressions seem to be getting out of control It is like she has been told to completely ham up her acting for some reason.
She is simply unwatchable in the bistro scenes. And that storyline where she was inviting Paul to kip at her house was just dumb.

This is what happens when a character has been in the show for years, she's been through so much that there are no longer any believable stories out there for her.

I prefer watching this silly version of her than the unbearable misery she was during the wretched Joe saga.

I don't mind Deirdre's OTT nonsense but it doesn't work with Gail.

I don't really know a lot about Ivy who a lot of people are comparing her to these days - are they similar?

Agree, I remember thinking she was really good in one scene when she was a bit tipsy, it showed a much lighter side of her but now it's gone too far. Maybe tone it down a bit

She isn't a natural comedic actress, and I think what they've done is try to lighten her gloomy character by giving her comedy scenes. I find her comedy attempts very forced and not at all natural. it's as though when she reads the script she thinks to herself 'the audience will kill themselves laughing at this' and to make sure we do she talks in a ridiculous baby voice whilst adding an array of bizarre faces to accompany it.
There again, Gail has always been slightly weird, with her batting eyelashes, simpering and the almost flirtatious relationship with Nick

Collinson sees Gail and Deirdre as comedy characters which of course they never were before. On some level they may be sub-consciously trying to turn Deirdre into her mother but it doesn't quite work.

Deirdre's character was ruined the moment she forgot all about what Tracy did to Charlie.

Its meant for "comedy value" i think its because phil collinson thinks all corrie viewers are dumb zombies.

I have noticed she puts on a strange voice also!

Gail has been stupid for quite some time, especially during David's Demon period.

I love Gail at the moment. Far from being some mutant creature dreamt up by the production team, the current 'comedy' Gail is actually very much like the character was when she first arrived in the mid 70s. There's definite continuity there - even down to the 'comedy voice'. There's Plenty of evidence on YouTube. Helen Worth might not be the world's greatest comedy actress, but I love her. In the 70s, the stories with Gail, Suzie and Elsie versus the Ogdens are some of Corrie's best ever comedy, so I defy anyone who says Gail has never been a comedy character ... even you Lousiana

Deirdre on the other hand is another matter. Her descent into a dim, thick-as-piggy-muck dumbarse really IS out of character. Deirdre has never, ever been thick or stupid, yet she's been portrayed that way for the past couple of years.

Yes I agree with all that KK. Corrie is desperate for a new Blanche, but it's not going to happen with Deirdre and certainly not with Gloria, (unless Sue's scripts improve massively).

What's frustrating is that late 80s and 90s Deirdre would have morphed quite naturally into a Blanche style character. She was fairly down on life for about 15 years or so, quite grumpy and mardy yet still strong-willed enough to say what she thought with confidence and conviction.

She's not even the same person now.

I agree it's nice to see Gail have some fun for a change but the way Gail is being written and played right now just feels weird, and out of sync with the person she is now. I almost don't buy her as the same character. She shouldn't be the person she was as a teenager - and going not so far back, she worked at the cafe for 20 years so she should be a dab hand at dealing with the public, far from the perennial first day on the job she seems to be on now.

I know you don't mean it this way KK, but I hate the comedy character label - to me it means someone used solely for comedy who has no grounding in reality. Even the funniest characters should work dramatically too. One of the biggest problems with Corrie lately is that a few characters seem to be pigeonholed under the comedy character banner.

Agree about Deirdre though.

Yes, totally stupid. And is she Nick's mini minion or something, she is always by his side. And is she manager or something, she doesn't seem to be the cleaner anymore. For some reason I find Nick and Gail's relationship on-screen weird somehow.
