I'd say they've got two of the best

Me too. Stevie Wonder is fab.

Based on what they'll be dancing to, I'll be watching Colin, Fern, Johnny & Jerry through my fingers....Denise, Nicky, Victoria, Louis & Kimberley I'm more confident about. Michael, Richard & Sid's songs are slow enough for them to conquer, Lisa's will be the most fun whilst Dani's landed the most boring song of the lot and deserves much more.

I like those songs.

James Brown is...
Stevie Wonder, Aretha, Sam Cooke -- it's got to be good. My only complaint is that we always hear the same same familiar songs. They're great but they are very familiar. 'Think' is terrific but why not go on a few albums and take 'Spirit in the Dark', which is probby a bit fresher to most ears? Or since they're in that era, why not Marlena Shaw or the Ramsey Lewis Trio, or any of the hundreds of other great artists, Billy Stewart, Fontella Bass etc etc?

Just for the hell of it, 'Rescue Me', Fontella Bass's big hit, and then the Ramsey Lewis Trio version of 'Wade in the Water'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXSocE_M1G4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAh6j-6pv2E

and Spirit in the Dark gets a 3x rating
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_qfe9fl8e8
(starts a bit slowly this one, as John Peel used to say...)

= Nowt to do with the show, sorry.

(me = impatient and seeking diversion )

Because people who watch Strictly aren't massive musos. They want music they can recognise and hum along to and they're trying to cover a massive demographic.

Most people who may not be familiar with an artist will recognise virtually all those songs once they've started.

I don't like Pendleton's outfit but seeing as she is dancing to that song, couldn't she have a wardrobe reveal?

and love erin's dress!

Good thinking - it could be a reveal.

How do you know that?

In any case, most of those songs I mentioned are familiar enough once you hear them, even if not every watcher can can voluntarily recall them. The advertising industry makes sure of that. But I dunno. I think occasionally the choices are just a little jaded. That's not to criticise Cooke et al. At all

Oh, I totally agree with you, but they're never going to make left-field or edgy choices. Strictly is very conservative with a small c and they're going to make the safe, boring choice every time.

Forget me, I'm all on edge to see Colin is all. The neither safe nor boring gorgeous one...

(Prays ardently he's not crap)

I love your song choices, PM, but out there in the real world the viewers will have enough trouble remembering who the contestants are, let alone what they danced to. So, 'Ooh, Hayley, what's the name of that bloke off the telly who danced to
Spoiler
' might get a vote for Richard.

Sorry to be cynical but, for the first few weeks the mantra is: 'get the public to remember who you are' and one way of doing that is to have a song that people know. It was a lesson that Martina Hingis learned the hard way when she danced to a beautiful but relatively unknown Roberta Flack song, 'Jesse'.

I'm not saying it's the ONLY reason, mind, just that I wouldn't run the risk of playing an unknown song for the first few weeks.

I think we'll be getting a pro dance to round out the hour as well tonight as there's one less person dancing than normal.

Heading out with some friends to kill a few hours now - will be back in good time but probably not keeping a commentary...

Aarrgh! Just realised I gave away a song title in my post, PM. Not fair for those who don't want that info in advance. I've quickly put spoiler tags in my post, but could you please delete that bit in the quote thingy in your post as well? Hope that makes sense.

My apologies to anybody I've upset/offended/annoyed.

9 pm start? How skimpy are these costumes gonna be?

The music choices are giving me flashbacks to Wembley last year.

Broken nose for James?

I hope he goes for the sympathy vote and dances with a big wad of cotton wool in each nostril.

Evening all!!!!

Woohoo, finally home and sat down for the first time today. Tea eaten (3 different ones, neither very nice at all, but at least I've eaten!), shoes off, PJ's on the radiator (because it's cold today!), and I think I'm all set. Probably wont even need snacks by the time it starts.

Very excited!!!

Just to add - for anyone who might be watching/listening to Karen's red button commentary, she has last year's winner Harry Judd with her tonight as the celebrity guest. Don't know who's with her tomorrow

Shout out to all my friends on Strictly Game Forum. Hope y'all are watching and will enjoy the show tonight

Got a feeling Denise will get marked down tonight due to the critism.
