Contacted EA support to once again see if they could help. Live chat this time.
Was advised to contact Apple for a refund on the game??!
'Support' don't even know the game is free never mind how to help resolve issues surrounding it.
He couldn't roll the game back to an earlier time when it actually worked.
I had to wait 50 minutes for this. 15 to get connected to chat and 35 actually chatting including 15 minutes on hold whilst he looked for my account. And ten with him asking me for the 'game code' but not being able to actually tell me what the 'game code' was. Only to turn out to be the receipt number that 'I paid' for the free game. Despite me having told him earlier it was free.
Utter shambles!

I'm really hoping they let us buy one once the event ends. It has happened before so I don't see why they wouldn't do it again... For donuts of course
