Time management.
Cranfield
05-10-2012
Don't the BBC have people managing the action on a programme during its performance ?

One of the most important elements of SCD is the judges comments, why are they the first to go ?

Why not eliminate some of Bruce or Tess's inane remarks.

If they had too much for a one hour programme, why not extend the time.

Tonights programme was spoiled by the rushing to catch up in the last 15 minutes.

I totally agree with Cranfield. The BBC should drop Bruce's inane jokes if they are short of time, not the judges' comments. After all it is a dancing competition, not a platform for Bruce Forsyth's cringeworthy jokes.

Absolutely. Dropping the empty cup of cocoa farce would have saved a few minutes.

I don't know if they used time management as an excuse so that Darcey didn't speak as much because the yahs and oks were getting annoying.

But yes, they need to time it much better, cut out stupid skits with martinis and could be more time.

It'll be worse tomorrow, 2 extra dances but only extra 15 mins.

In tonight's programme the comments from the judges were less important than getting in all the dances.

In any event much of what the judges say is just "showboating" it's just "part of this enjoyable pantomime."
I often wonder who are more competitive, the dancers or the judges with each other.

Maybe they could just cut out Bruce

Couldn't agree more.

There are a couple of things BBC could have done tonight to manage their time better,

1. Stop brucie telling jokes as they are just not funny

2. maybe started it earlier like at 8.30 instead of 9 as all they had on at 8.30 was a repeat of Miranda. this way they would not have needed to rush at all.

I agree with most people on here, they shouldn't be running late and cutting out judges comments when they give Bruce so much time with his stupid "jokes". It's really bad management for the first show to be running out of time and it's not fair on the contestants who were rushed off after only hearing a couple of judges' comments - I can only presume it was because Bruce talked longer than he should.

Well I agree, cut the Bruce jokes and random props (of glasses and Coco) and fit in what matters.
They could also cut down Bruce and Tess's entrance (and the talk from that) as we don't need to hear much more than "hello, welcome, nice to see you to see you [response] nice." After that they can briskly say anything of importance, if needed to be said, and then move straight onto the first dance. I want to hear less from tess and bruce (particulalry him) and more from the judges. But of course no one will dare tell Bruce to stop butting in with what the judges are saying.

Of course we need to keep in mind that this and tomorrows show had the couples intros so maybe following shows will allow that extra min or so more for a judge to speak.

The trouble is they might have been on time until a certain point and there were no Bruce joke moments to cut out, but they should be first to be cut.

One thing that does need sharpening up is how long each judge speaks, as several times Craig was allowed to go on too long tonight. That's down to Bruce, although the judges should know by now to highlight rather that have a long list of comments (mainly Craig again). Every judge should be able to comment.

Personally I think they should have just run over.

Still it was just the first show.

But that would have resulted in a clash with Corrie - a definite no-no.

The odd thing is that last year they managed seven contestants in the space of an hour just fine - so no idea how they had to rush six!

Agreed, they did not need a long analysis of the performances by Craig. Being the first programme, the celebrities needed a few helpful comments to boost their confidence and no more than one critical comment. They can go into more detail off camera later.

The BBC are paying a lot of money to fill time slots. They have enough for a longer time slot yet waste it. They could have added another half hour onto the show and the show would have been better - for very little extra cost.

Bad financial management too.

No they couldn't. Half an hour before and it clashes with Corrie, half an hour later and where does the news go?

They've often done this before, where not every judge is given time to speak about all the contestants. Why is everyone so surprised?

Why was it on at 9pm?
Why not put it on earlier?

I didn't mean they could extend it just off the cuff. Just schedule in a 90 minute show instead of 60 minutes. They had plenty of time to sort that out, like 6 months?

Because if it was on earlier it would be against Corrie! Any scheduler knows you don't put the launch of your biggest light entertainment show against one of the big soaps which will be getting 7-8m!

They had fourteen contestants to film. They probably started in the early evening and did the whole lot. Then they showed us an edited version of the first "half" and we will see the rest of it tomorrow which has already been recorded.

Does anyone feel like the opening Vt for each celeb was quite long, brilliant because it was training footage, but it felt drawn out. But then I guess they need to introduce them properly, but isn't that what launch show is for.

I know we need the VTs so they have time to do staging and for the band to sort their music out but maybe that's why they overran.

Also, Darcey was giving really good advice but she took her time to say it. Alesha's "you woz lovely" doesn't take long at all.

I would much rather have long Vts and judge's advice than Bruce's inane withering and cocking up of autocue though.

I hate the interminable VTs. We are all smart enough to know that they do some practice between appearances.

I want longer critiques from the judges so that I can gain knowledge about the finer points of ballroom dancing.

I hope you are wrong because people have tickets for tonight's show!
