I'm just wondering as it stands, if there' actually any character in the soap right now that is wholesome with happiness?

Seriously, before the old 'it's a soap card' is pulled' have a think:

Phil
Max
Alfie n Kat
Lola
Billy
Jay

Of late, it's just depressing in an abundance.

Apart from that gag on Derek, Monday Night, the soap just lacks ideas outside the box.

It's absolutely true. Virtually every single one is miserable, mean, spiteful and only out for themselves - it really is at a terrible state, and I just feel like calling it a day with this.....

Oh please gimme a break . People have been moaning about the misery in EE since it started . Yet they still tune in every episode .
If you don't like it , then don't watch it . Easy peasy .
Otherwise change the record.

I don't tune in to every episode as a result of the current dross I'm having to endure given that I'm trying to be supportive as viewer.

EE has always been pretty depressing and I've watched it on and off since it started. I don't think its worse now than it ever has been from what I remember. The people of Walford are cursed to live awful lives where they can never get a decent job or better themselves. Still the ones labouring away as cleaners or working in the chippy are the lucky ones, the rest end up married to adulterers, or murderers and having their loved ones killed in random circumstances.

Obviously the whole premise of the programme is to make us all feel thankful that we don't live there

I'm afraid that's not the case: The setting in EastEnd of London may appear dull and bland, but from the 80s and 90s, folk on the whole were generally jolly, and thoughtful towards one another despite the struggles and don't forget, this was a projection of the Thatcher governement where times were really tough.

That side of EastEnd, I can relate to - however the current plight is like a school playground and just full of hatred and selfishness.

This. You've even got drama in Disney movies with one character wanting to marry someone or kill someone or both.

Eastenders has always been depressing. It's notorious for being just that. How anybody could watch it and be shocked at how depressing it is is beyond me. It'd be like watching CSI and complaining that it's too murdery.

When they do come up with ideas outside the box (Fatboy and Denise) people on here still moan so they can't win.

Don't think EE is any more depressing now than it's always been. At least they try to include a bit of humour in it now and again with the likes of Kim Fox.

Thinking about it the other soaps have become just as bad in terms of depressing stories. Corrie is hardly a laugh a minute these days and Emmerdale has the most unlikeable characters of any of them.

EE when it began was actually a lot funnier/optimistic than it later became, there was a lot of humour in the early years with Dot, Ethel and Lou. It was probably from about 1990 that it started earning its stripes as a grim serial.

Julia Smith believed East End humour was an essential part of the show and she was right. People may remember stuff like Arthur's breakdown from the early years, but many 80s episodes had no plot at all and were often of a light hearted nature. Some of the Ethel/Lou/Dot stuff could be straight out of vintage Corrie.

There was a really funny episode where Michelle dyed Lofty's hair green and that's all that happened in that episode.

Even when EastEnders has a few light hearted episodes people always complain that ''it's not what EastEnders is about''.

There are plenty of characters who aren't miserable, mean, spiteful and only out for themselves. Such as;

Patrick
Jean
Denise
Abi
Jay
Tamwar
Masood
Fatboy
Alfie
Kim
Alice
Christian

You're right, but the point is EE literally never has one character who is allowed to be happy for more than 5 minutes; that's why it's totally unrealistic and makes for such depressing viewing. I don't mind all the drama but surely one happy couple out of all those who've lived in Walford isn't too much to ask?

Actually not. My mum said it was too depressing 12 years ago, and hasn't watched since.

EE is at its best when dealing with serious social issues and everyday life which happens to be quite boring and depressing. I can never get enough of the social realist take on life.

I don't dispute this list at all as there are equally some likeable characters - Christian is a superb actor.

But the point is that they need to get the right blend. People like myself want to be cheered a bit not completely plummeted down with doom and gloom.

The social worker storyline was heavy and emotional stuff last night.
