Lorraine Newman's Eastenders beginning to show?
I think we are very slowly starting to see her put her mark on the show...changing the Vic decor, better character interactions i.e-Zainab & Ian a few weeks ago and now Phil and Fatboy. Kat has been written alot better since her return, yes the shagger story is still going on but I have enjoyed watching her this week in her scenes with helping Michael and Lola and fighting to keep hold of the Vic. Lola has been really developed these past 2 weeks, Fridays episode with her losing Lexi was just heartbreaking. We also have Denise and Fatboy on the way, yes on paper it sounds strange but it shows that Lorraine is intent on developing and keeping hold of Denise who has been underused for far to long. There is still some way to go and sadly ratings right now arent reflecting the improvement we have been seeing but things are starting to feel different or is it just me?

I think you're being very over-optimistic. Character development is all fine and well but what is the point of that when there are virtually no big storylines, too many pointless characters and amateurish scripts/directing.
Last nights episode was quite embarrassing, especially the girl gang scenes. Everything feels very flat on EE atm, there's no life to the show. The ratings are disappointing but I'm glad that they are because it should give TPTB a kick up the backside. Sadly, the ratings are reflecting the quality. |

Apparently Kathleen Beedles has said the Lola stuff we saw last night was planned under her and Bryan. I don't know if Lorraine's work is beginning to show yet but I hope not because it does feel flat at the minute with no big storylines bubbling up.

Drama emerges quite naturally from the characters and their relationships, written in a generous and nuanced way. Lola, Kat and Michael in particular have benefited a lot from this character driven approach. I am however less convinced by the outsiders (female gang, social worker) who are deliberately portrayed in a caricatural light to shore up the community spirit. |

Actually, Kathlleen Beedles has been tweeting and hers and Kirkwood's work will go all the way to the New Year.
Kathleen Beedles @KittyBeed @scottishphoenix that Lola stuff was planned when I was there. Heartbreaking. Kathleen Beedles @KittyBeed @EESprite @scottishphoenix various stories right up to New Year. Just way it goes with longterm planning. Exciting stuff coming up!! X |

Still too many panto characters - 'he's-behind-you' villain Derek, combined with the 'Sylvia Young posse' are dragging the show down.
Yes, the little gems like the Ian and Zainab scene and Sharon's scenes with little Denny are good, but there's still too much tat balancing the decent stuff. More focus on strong, credible storylines and believable characters will help to return 'EastEnders' to form. |

Plus one Simon Ashdown episode is enough to make you forget about all the other drivel that's been shown previously.

I suspect there wasn't much Newman could change with everything seemingly leading to Derek's exit, there would've been too much to change.
I look forward to seeing her work onscreen next year and I'm confident we'll have a new family with no ties to the Square to spice the show up. |

Yes it is, I had hoped we'd see a bit of an improvement but we haven't, it's just getting worse.

Its not getting worse, this time last year we had just seen the end of the drivel that was Eddie/Michael/Tyler/Craig one of the worst EE stories in a long time.

I disagree.
A remarkable achivement throughout Kirkwood's era as a whole - as poor as it was - was character interaction and community feel. These elements have been in place since Kirkwood got his hands on the show so how on Earth are these supposed to be things that LN has brought to the show when they have been in place for the best part of 28 months? And if you genuinely think that Denise/Fatboy has the potential to be a half-decent storyline then... |

But this current "Who's Shagging Kat" nonsense isn't? Seriously?
But this year it's the opposite.. A horrible story about characters who are so loved.. They were so loved anyway. And that's the thing, bringing back legendary characters to destroy them in sickening stories |
