Should soaps be true to real life?
After watching EE last it got me questioning once again should soaps be true or truer to real life.
I know EE is a drama and not a documentry but it does have an impact on it's viewers. There are always legal issues such as divorce, criminal and family which EE, Corrie and ED are so poor on representing when it comes down to be true to form. Last nights EE episode was so far fetched and even though the acting was fab the writting let the episode down. Should soaps announce at the start of every episode in a little written piece that they are not based on real life or should the shows researchers and writers write their stories as true to what would happen in the real world as they can get without losing the entertainment aspect side of the show. |

On some issues I think they should (Cancer SL, Illness SL, drug and alcohol addiction and Sensitive issues).

Yes. If I couldn't relate to it in any way, I wouldn't watch. Just like I can't relate to teenagers living in luxury in LA, getting angsty over problems of their own doing in shows such as 90210. Obviously, there should be use of dramatic licence, otherwise all EE episodes over summer would show Masood mowing his garden (not a euphimism) with his shirt off or Zainab moaning to some old dear on the bus about the heat. I think this : Quote:
or should the shows researchers and writers write their stories as true to what would happen in the real world as they can get without losing the entertainment aspect side of the show"
is what they should be aiming for.
