Hi.

Being a Virgin Media TiVo user I have noticed that 90% of what I watch and record is actually on Freesat.

I was wondering a few questions of what box is more suitable for me, I was wondering if any of the new boxes (not legacy boxes) have the ability to archive recordings from the HDD to a computer either via FTP, USB or any other manner, the box should have BBC iPlayer and ITV Player as I have these on Virgin and would not like to loose them.

I have heard the Humax is good but I don't know which one has the export features.

Cheers, many thanks.

If I were you I'd wait until the Freesat Free Time boxes launches properly and get the Humax one and you can do whatever you want with it via a few software downloads from the internet
- here are the websites you need to read first

To be honest, the Freetime one is a bit out of my budget.

Btw is true that most Freesat boxes don't allow you to RECORD two channels while watching a previous recording?

What is your Budget for a new box?
All Freesat+ boxes should allow recoding of 2 while watching a previous recording providing you have a twin cable feed from the LNB.
Recording is limited if you only have a single feed from LNB.
I'm not too sure if any brand other than Humax allow archiving so hopefully someone will come along to say if any others do.
One limitation at the moment is that most boxes still don't have ITV player at this time. Currently at the mo there's only 3 that do.

Thanks, I looked at the Samsung, the Humax HDR and the Echostar one, and they all say that you can watch ONE while recording another, not record two and watch one.

EchoStar HDS-600RS:
Highlights: Watch one channel whilst
recording another, series link &
record programmes at the
touch of a button
Humax Foxsat HDR 500GB :
Features & Functions:
freesat HD and SD channel recording
Simultaneous viewing of one channel and recording another channel
Record 2 channels at the same time
Samsung SMT-S7800
Fed up of having limited choice when you want to record a programme? With Samsung this is no longer a problem. Due to the built-in twin tuner, you can now record one channel and watch another at the same time. Samsung offers choice and flexibility to suit your needs
Each stating that youn can only record one while watching another, which is a bit of a bummer when you think of Sky (record 2 and watch one) and Virgin (record 3 while watching one)

My budget is around £230

No problem to record two channels and watch a recorded programme at the same time with the Foxsat HDR. Doing it right now!
Also possible to record two different channels and watch another different channels if it shares the same polarity as one of the other channels being recorded.
This is all assuming that the two cables from the dish are being used, as GONZO says.
Just to add, the quotes you mention also don't actually say that it is not possible to record two and watch another previously recorded one.

All of them should let you watch a recording while recording two, watching a recording does not need a tuner.

afaik the Foxsat-hdr is unique that you can use two tuners to record two channels and watch a 3rd live depending on what you are recording (A Sky box can't do this either).

For instance you can record BBC1-HD and BBC-HD and watch ITV1-HD and live pause it as well. You can even do this using only a single coax cable if you have the version of ITV1-HD which has the same polarisation as the BBC channels (ITV1-HD Granada)

Why ?. Replaying a recording does not need a tuner.

If you could stretch your budget to about £50 more, then waiting for a Free Time box would give you a better choice of on demand features than the current Freesat+ boxes do.
The New Humax box is going to be £279.99.
Possible when other branded Free Time boxes arrive you may be able to get one cheaper than that too.

Thank you everyone. Just wanted to be sure as the specs didn't even say about the record two and watch one, and thanks grahamlthompson, I understood that it doesn't require a tuner however I didn't know if it was a software limitation.

Nice one, thanks
Just hope they don't change it before I get some more money in my account.

Thanks for that heads up.

I also noticed on the same site they have the 1tb box down as a November release at £259.99

http://www.powerdirect.co.uk/product...R-HDR1000S-1TB

I just might hold off till November.

I like the spec of the HDR1000S but it gets no prizes from me for design. This box is ugly !. Give me a traditional rectangular shape anyday.

Hi Graham,

Just to let you know ITV1-HD Granada seems to have changed. It used to be Vertical but is now H.

Oops ITV1-London now matches the BBC-HD channel polarisation so it would have to be that one using a single cable

This is what the Samsung manual says:

Watching a 3rd channel
When 2 recordings are in progress from the 2 different transport streams you can
watch another programme from them

At first I thought that meant I could watch a 3rd channel whilst recording on 2 others but you now have me wondering if the manual's bad English ought to say "Record 2 and watch a previously recorded programme at the same time"?

Sounds to me that you can watch a 3rd channel sharing a transponder with either recording.

Easy to check. Start a recording on BBC1-HD, start a second on ITV1-HD and check if you can still watch BBC-HD.

I'll give that a try later on and let you know how it goes.

Cheers Graham!

Yes indeed - just tested it - I was able to record 2 channels ITV1 HD and BBC1 HD and watch BBCHD all at the same time.

Great

Do you want to try the other trick the Foxsat can do.

Record BBC-HD and BBC1-HD tune to ITV1-HD can you live pause it ?

Here's one the Foxsat can't do but the HDR FOX T2 can.

Do the above, stop one of the recordings, can you now record ITV1-HD from where you started watching it (ie from the start of the timeshift buffer).

Will give that a try as well - out of curiosity, might not be for a while though
