i agree with the other poster. yes all of this work is still kath's work but it doesn't mean LN didn't want it changed.
Kathleen Beedles said some of the storylines she and Kirkwood planned are still going on (i.e Lexi being taken away). It's hard now to decipher who's storyline is who's.
This.

Not really. A ONS can't = sudden love affair. The ONS aspect was dropped from the entire thing, but anyway there were other examples I listed if you didn't agree with the Kat/MM one.

Derek's children being brought in would have likely been a long running decision, not based on audience reception. EastEnders writing team would have to have sat down, drawn up the character arcs of both Joey and Alice, and cast the actors to play them, which would take several months. Then, that actor/actress would need to come in a flim scenes which are flimed up to eight weeks in advance (so two months). Jasmine Banks would have started fliming for Alice, possibly as early March, and would have had to have gone through the audition and casting process months/weeks before that. The real negative commentry I noticed began around January on Derek, and by then it's likely the casting plans for Joey and Alice would have already been in a pipeline.
they casted Joey in April and later brought in alice. too much of a coincidence. they softened derek and more people liked him.

yeah i know i wasn't agreeing or disagreeing just saying it wasn't the same with phil/derek as they never had screentime together.

Im pretty sure BK left in march and kath a month later. its completely possible LN wanted kath to change things. BK would still have work going on now yes but not everything. Kath said some things are still their work but not down to every single detail.

Dierderick left in February 2010 but his storyline's were still on screen in spring last year.

Of course, but little things would have changed whether they were still there or not.

Oh thank God. Hopefully his pointless, inane sprogs will follow suit.

Though I am led to ponder - what did Derek actually ever do during his time on the show? Sure, he's wandered about a lot and looked 'menacing' while getting involved in other people's storylines; but what, of note, has he ever actually done?

If they're going down the whodunnit route, I fear it will be quite a failure. He's a completely undeveloped character and suddenly slapping a quick storyline on him to facilitate a whodunnit isn't going to garner interest in the way Who Shot Phil? and Who Killed Archie? did.
I agree with this. I can't think of one storyline Derek has had for himself...

However, as others have said, a whodunnit seems likely and with all the Branning drama being built up recently, they'll be a lot of potential suspects.

Even then, unless they do massive rewrites and scrap storylines that have been planned months in advance (which I'm pretty sure they've avoided since Louise Berridge left), his stuff will still be on screen in some form next year.

Kirkwood left in April and Beedles a few weeks later.

Newman's material is filtering through though, Carly returning for those episodes was one of the first things she did according to Kellie.

im not saying everything was scrapped but some stuff was. its normal for things to be changed it doesnt mean there has to be loads of re-writes.

pretty sure he left earlier than that. it was a pretty sharp exit. they obviously would've said he left in april so it didnt seem like he was pushed out.

yep that proves to me even more things were changed. i doubt BK had kellie's return in mind.

They couldn't have brought in Alice later, as Jasmine Banks was fliming before David Witts (Banks entered the show in May, Witts in June). And they announced Witts' casting around April. I don't see the coincidence factor. Even by spring, it would have still taken several months to plan the introduction of characters, through arcs, and auditions.

As softening Derek, I disagree. His control of Alice, such as going on dates with her, his bullying of Lucy and Anthony did not show a softer side to him. Nor did his mind game with Joey.

Your last pararaph has just confused me now, and I'm not inclined to argue that point further.

so why did they just drop phil/derek if they weren't making him softer?

people hated him before they brought in his children. im sure i remember reading an article that they were brought in for a reason. he was never meant to have kids in the first place

It will be Carol who does it as an act of revenge for his part in David Wicks leaving and causing her to do that comedy fall as she chased after his car.

I think both of them were pushed. Two of the most important people on the show gone at almost the same time. They were obviously allowed to save face.

this.

im still really annoyed the phil/derek feud was dropped lol
Im glad it was dropped. I hated their fued over who was the King of the Square it was just pathetic and cringey, and Phil allowing Derek to run his businesses while he was in prison was not believable and just stupid.

Down to inconsistient writing, as I tried to make a point of before. Remember the MM/Derek feud has still be ongoing. And people hated him before they brought in his kids, and still hate him.

I actually don't mind Derek now he's stopped constantly pretending he's a gangster.

The scripts for Alice's intro would have been written in Jan/Feb time. I'm guessing the castings were done before the new year.

well MM/derek feud couldve been dropped for the same reason phil/derek was. people might still hate him but alice/joey brought a new direction for him.
