EE Gay characters
IanMandy

Is it me or does every gay character fall in love with Christian- even Steven Beale and Ben Mitchell and all the one off gay characters! Even Christian loves himself! Danny seems to be the first exception ever. Bit unrealistic. Why don't they show gay men fancying straight men either?

I think your second questions answers your first (with Steven, at the time Christian was the only gay character hence Steven had to fancy Christian they apparently couldnt make him fancy a straight guy)

I think with Steven and Ben, Christian showed them support/kindness, and they saw it as interest because Christian's gay. Weird how similar their retaliations to Christian's knockback were - really original EE

As for gay men fancying straight men, you probably have a point, but then again they don't really have anyone fancying anyone else without it turning into something. And Syed did tell Tanya that he thought Greg was very fit.

Its a shame that gays dont fancy straight men in EE- its a real issue and can lead to drama (esp f it is someone like Phil/Derek)

I'm not gay but Syed had a point

I bet if they ever did a SL with a gay guy fancying a straight guy the two guys would be best
mates, I would rather that two men involved werent mates but just knew each other.

I'd love for a gay guy to fall for Phil because I could trust him to handle the issue delicately

I know, but to be fair from a drama point of view it wouldn't really lead anywhere would it? When someone fancies someone else in soap generally, 9 times out of 10 it ends up being reciprocated at some point. And what would the resolution be?

If it is someone like Phil, then we can explore his vulnerability, maybe have a feud erupt etc

I think Ian would be a better choice, he'd really stuggle in that sort of situation whereas Phil would just deck the man who tried it on with him.

I agree that could be an interesting storyline if it allowed to question heterosexual masculinity (a very defensive construction, after all ) but I cannot see EE ever going there. It is simply too threatening to a mainstream audience that thinks in terms of hetero/homo oppositions

Where would you go with it in story terms though? We've had gay man state their attraction towards straight men before now albeit with a throw away line. It's a totally different kettle of fish with having it into a proper storyline.

They did something similar with Sonya and Naomi, Sonya wasn't a lesbian but she could not handle the fact Naomi fancied her and she went off her trolly. She was not able to deal with her emotions properly. The storyline was a flop though because they struggled to illustrate what was actually going on.

Duncan, bens love interest didn't fall for Christian.

I agree though its stupid how they ALL have to get involved, with Christian, he's not even good looking and he's in his 40's FFS.

do like him though

There seemed to be a bit of subtext with Ben having a crush on Jay.

But really you cant go too far with an unrequited love story, unless you turn the gay guy fancying the straight one in to some obsessed stalker and then you run the risk of complaints, rightly so, from gay people who dont want to be portrayed as some sinister dark predators who cant take no for an answer and want to 'turn' people gay etc...

Might be interesting and realisitic to have the odd throwaway comment similar to big mo saying she fancies joey or whatever...have christian check tyler out and flirt with him etc...?

Now that is subjective

It's not like they all fancy him. In fact Syed was the only one who really did. Steven and Ben were rather different in the sense that they were more than a bit mixed up and when Christian was kind to them, they thought that because he was gay, they had a chance  it might even have been an experiment in Steven's case because I'm not sure we knew if he'd been with any guys before or had even realised that he was gay?

I wasn't thinking of a relationship but a storyline that involves a straight male falling in love with/feeling sexually attracted to a gay man (possibly a close friend) and struggling with his identity.
The Sonya and Naomi storyline was simply exploitative as storylines about lesbians in soaps always are. They are just played for visual/erotic spectacle and even that didn't quite work

It's not only about age or looks.
As an out and proud gay man, Christian is the type that would attract those who are in search of their identity.
It is unfortunate however that this attraction is always coded as sexual as if a friendship between gay men is unthinkable.
