So, what actually has Derek done during his time in the show...

So he's leaving...

What's he ACTUALLY done storyline-wise? Barely anything is coming to mind apart from him lurking around the square thinking he's completely badass

He beat up Michael

Dipping his nose into everyone else's stories (his penis into Kat and Alfie's story), and generally going around in circles with his two equally random children.

Nothing really- He's not even intimidating - he's a cartoon villain.

Generally being a crap 'gangster/villian'.
He has filled me with anger everytime I see him and I just want him dead.

It's a good question.

Over the last ten years we've had a number of 'villains' (both long and short term) but here are some most notable ones;

- Phil Mitchell
- Janine (although she's become far more three-dimensional in the last couple of years)
- Chrissie Watts
- Andy Hunter
- Danny Moon
- Johnny Allen
- Jack Dalton
- Michael Moon
- Mad May
- Archie Mitchell

A general list.

Phil, in the last ten years or so has; taken a child away from its mother, amongst beating people up and generally being a bully, from his godson Jamie, his son Ben to even his own mother and has also covered up murder.

Janine has scammed several men, tried to kill her husband Ryan, and kidnapped a baby as well as stabbing herself to frame Stacey amongst other things.

Chrissie Watts, along with her then husband Den conned Sam Mitchell into giving over the Vic, and killed her husband, manipulating Zoe and Sam in the aftermath and cover-up.

Andy Hunter was involved in dealings with Johnny Allen, including an attempt to con him which led to his death.

Danny Moon was a Johnny Allen puppet, who killed Dennis Rickman.

Johnny Allen had a backstory as a notorious EastEnd gangster (a real one, not one the Derek dreams of up in his head) he was responsible for the deaths of Andy Hunter and Dennis Rickman.

Jack Dalton was head of the Firm - he ordered to deaths of several people - Den Watts, Kate Morton and Dennis Rickman.

Michael Moon slept with his cousin's wife, stalked Ronnie and set her up, tried to get his brother killed as revenge from his late mother's death, and conned Jean Slater.

Archie Mitchell was a rapist, a paedophile, a cheater, and a manipulator. That's pretty much all that needs to really be said.

Mad May, tried to force a caesarean on Dawn, and kidnap her child.

Against all of those villains, Derek fails miserably.

Derek, in his time has been involved an in dodgy booze deal, where Alfie Moon and Billy outsmarted him. He taunted an old woman on her death bed, bullied Lucy and Anthony Moon, and tried to manipulate Roxy and Billy Mitchell. He beat up MM. That's lame in comparison to all these other villains.

Ben Mitchell was more of a villian than Derek will ever be and a believable one.

Agreed. I enjoyed watching Ben onscreen, especially this year.

That actually makes him sound a lot more active than he has been. I think the reason why he's such a failure is because none of his storylines actually went anywhere. They finished too quickly.

Me too, I found Ben as a character incredibly interesting, especially his psychology. Never liked him and when I heard that he would kill Heather I was like WTF?! But Heathers death was the making of him

Same. Joshua a great actor and he and the writers made Ben interesting and watchable.

I think it's because he was a very poorly developed character. His 'storylines' were quite lame to begin with, and thus they were quite restricted as to how far they could have gone. All the other villians in my list had depth - Archie, although sensationalised towards the end had a backstory interconnected into the entire pyschology of the Mitchell family, with a abusive ex-solider as a father, who was also an alcoholic.

Archie's controlling tendencies were documented with flair, and was part of a backstory of Ronnie's 'ice queen' persona. Archie made a impact with the way he manhandled Ronnie in his introduction, and the way he tried to control his own daughter. The way he even used and manipulated Roxy, ala Sean. The way he even considered killing Danielle, and manipulated her to, just so he could control Ronnie a tighten his grip over the Mitchell family through matariach Peggy, over the likes of Phil. This wasn't even that long ago; this was under Santer.

I agree. I actually miss Ben now, (not that I want to him to return) but he was such a good villian, his absence in noticeable.

I think there is still scope for Ben to return in the future, especially after the Lexi revelation. In 20 years, Phil will be 72 so there is definite need for a new Mitchell 'hard man' to take over.

I wonder if EE copied HO with Ben and Brendan- both gay but not stereotypes like Christian and both villains. I like the idea; not only does that end the tokenism but it shows that gays can be dangerous too

The Ben plot was actually very similar to the Steven Beale plot we had a couple of years ago. It did annoy me how they seem to portray that young guys who cannot cope with their sexuality will go on to be complete nutters.
