Ok, I think I have worked out what Max Branning's Manchester secret is. When he went to that house, he seemed to be considering whether or not to knock on the door, before putting money through the door. I think he might have got a woman pregnant. The money could be for child support, and maybe he wanted to go into the house to see the child. I also think the woman could be who he has been in contact with, instead of him beings Kat's mystery man.

I think that was sharon on the game for money for her kid, and max and derek didnt know who she was so max slept with her and only those 3 know then it somehow comes out because of derek and sharon and tanya will be at eachothers throats and all that but seriously its all bit awkward between max, sharon and derek...

More likely that he married another woman whilst he was there, regretted it and ran out on her - probably why he's worried about marrying tania, it would be bigomus if he never got a divorce.

I think Max killed or paralysed someone husband/father, he feels guilty and is paying them money or they are blackmailing him for cash.
I'd say he has a child by someone else.
Can I point out though, before the "He married someone to get them in the country and now he has to pay them off" theory gets floated around, that this theory annoys me. If he married someone to get them into the country, THEY would pay HIM. Not the other way around.
