IPod Touch apps going walkabout

I'm thinking of getting a 5thGen iPod Touch to carry round as a slimmed down iPhone - ie without the actual phone but capable of running various apps. When I say "carry round", I have a Mifi unit already that I use with my laptop. It will drive up to 5 devices at a time. So I'm thinking this'll be just fine for running the iPod Touch sans telephony instead of having to get a smart phone which I don't particularly want.

Anyone tried this?

It's not an awful idea, you could even just use a cheap Nokia that lasts weeks on a charge as a phone.

That's exactly what I use. I've been cannibalising and running 6310i s and those nice Nokia car kits for years. No intention of changing.
