Why do many of the older (pensionable age) characters in Emmerdale work on (mainly full time)?
i have no objections to characters suplementing their pension (hope i can eventually!) but so many feel its not right if they are told they are no longer required or to cut their hours.

If they are healthy and able to work, why not. It's only Edna and Pearl who are working and they are only doing a receptionist job, Alan and Betty don't work.

Why shouldn't older characters work? There is no compulsion, legally or otherwise, for anyone to retire when they reach pensionable age.

Or do you think the scrap heap beckons once people reach pensionable age?

At least it gives the characters something to do. They interract with many characters that Alan and Betty wouldn't due to their roles at the vet and at the haulage company?

No I don't think that at all!
I am 62 (pensionable age) and am working at the moment.
My point is, they get to well over 70 and get a bit uppity ifthey have their hours cit etc, thay is all that i meant and am sorry if I have offended anyone.

Age shouldn't matter at all when it comes to work. One of the butchers where I work is 82 and still comes into work every day (on his motorbike!!). He's worked for the comapny nearly 30 years and has only had a small number of days off sick. - its not about how old you are its how old you FEEL.

I din'd say that they shouldn't work on after reaching the age that they can draw their pension!
My comment is that some of them think they have a divine right to work FULL TIME!!
You have to realsie that they already get a state pension and maybe a bit of a private one.
I am past retiring age and I still work.
Hope that clears up the matter,.
