Why do I sense that Derek has sexual feelings for Alice?
Kenkennedykenne

He cares TOO much for it to just be Parental Affection. I mean, wanting to be kept informed of her every movement, every person she sees

He's an overprotective parent

Though they did turn Archie into a paedophile from nowhere

Overprotective is an understatement

Why does everything have to become "sexual"?

He is just an overprotective Dad. He hasn't been there for his daughter in the past and is over compensating. As well as that, she was mugged.

Another area of concern for him is that he doesn't want Joey to turn her against him...

"sexual" - weird post man...

i think Derek is meant to be that overprotective parent/brother type. Look at the way he reacted upon seeing David again, with him getting Derek's sister Carol pregnant even though it happened many years ago. He was still holding a grudge because he was so protective of his sister.

I totally agree.

Derek is just a very old fashioned man who appears to have just emerged from some kind of 50's/60's time capsule and has trouble dealing with the modern world He'll have watched Jim (or other men of Jim's generation or older) be like that with his daughter's (his sisters which is why he's followed suit and is also protective of Carol) and thinks that's the way to go. Old fashioned men nearly always looked out for their daughters much more than their sons - I suppose in those days there was a helluva lot of shame and embarrassment if they came home pregnant so they tried to avoid this happening. Derek is just cut from the same cloth as these men, nothing sexual in it at all IMO.

However he really does need to realise that time has moved on!

I don't sense anything sexual. He hasn't been in contact with his children more than a decade. So he thinks that he is making up for those time. He is just overprotective thats all. This side of him interests me more than his panto villain side.

maybe more controlling than most parents but thats about it .

I get the opposite feeling, I think he wants her to be totally pure - he vets any man she even dares to smile at and is always telling her to dress like a lady not a tart and so on.

Archie was enever a paedophile.

Those people have actual feelings of lust and/or love towards a child that has not yet hit puberty, in the same way "normal" people feel such things towards people more or less their own age.

For Archie, it had to do with control and punishment. He could make his daughter do certain things and then keep quiet. He was in every aspect of her life, the only male figure close to her. She was more like property rather than a kid he felt affection for. It was also a way of hurting Glenda, as she felt pushed aside for a younger model, like she said herself. So he may have used Ronnie as means to punish Glenda for whatever she was supposed to have done now.

After it turned out Ronnie did in fact, have a boyfriend and slept with him, Archie was no longer in control. He was in his daughters home-life, but could not be in her school-life, and was not the only person in her sex-life either. So she was dirty and that is why he took the kid from her.

It would have been very well possible that he had started on Roxy as well, but she always doted on her father, unlike Ronnie, so he knew he could control Roxy far more easily, by just giving her attention and presents. To control Ronnie, he needed the abuse, as she did not respond to being daddy's little princess as well as Roxy did.

Derek is just as controlling as Archie. So I feel there is a real risk he might at one point commit a rape, the victim could be just about anyone. He could fly into a rage over Carol or Alice sleeping with someone and attack them. He may use it to have power over someone else, be it a family member (like Lauren or Abi) or not (it would not have surprised me if he had overstepped that border with Lucy). Derek does not care about other people's feelings, wants control of every single person and situation, fully expecting everyone to do as he says. If they don't he reacts with violence.

If Derek is Kat's lover, I could see a situation where he wants to resume/continue the relationship, but she doesn't and prefers to remain faithfull to Alfie for once. Derek may force himself upon her and it all comes out, because Kat just can't keep this a secret (let's just hope she isn't pregnant).

Same for Tanya, I can totally see Derek hitting on her while drunk, she turns him down and he won't take no for an answer. If such a thing happens, especially with Tanya, a whodunnit would be huge, half the Square would be a suspect, especially if Derek does not manage to actually go through with it, because one of his brothers walks in, both of them know and love someone who has been raped, so their reaction would be even more severe.

No way . OP is way off the mark here .
Derek may be a lot of things but he is not an incestous pervert . He's just an old fashioned over protective father .
Why do people always shout pervert nowadays .

I don't see a sexual component to their relationship. Derek's just keen to establish himself as an old fashioned patriarch who feels duty bound to protect the women in his family. Joey is the same. Alice being so childlike and helpless only encourages them to view her as a vulnerable young maiden. Both Derek and Alice behave as though they just time travelled from the 1950s.

Joey is more the type.

Just like his father (who had a creepy interest in keeping Carol away from other men), Joey seems to want to keep Alice all to himself.

No way.

Derek does appear to be obsessed with his sister but he does not have sexual feelings for his daughter.

I'd agree with this more than Derek. Derek's ridiculously overprotective but I had to explain to someone that doesn't watch EE that Joey and Alice where brother and sister, not ex boyfriend trying to get back with his ex girlfriend.

To say Derek is a pedophile is to Jim and Reene (the Brannings dead mother) abused him

Why is everyone obsessed with Derek being a rapist? I don't get it.

He's creepy. Don;t think he's got a thing for Alice though. Wouldn't surprise me if there was more to his relationship with Michael or Carol though
